    • Step 1: Lead inGood morning, everyone. Today we are going to learn the reading and the thinking part of this unit. Here is a picture, what can you see in the picture, an earth? What is she doing? The earth is sleeping. Can earth sleep? No. This is the use of personification. Now I need you to imagine what will happen if the earth doesn't sleep at night. Probably she's ill? Probably something terrible would happen.Step 2: Prediction. Now I need you to predict what our passage is going to talk about by looking at the title and the pictures. The title is the night the earth didn't sleep. And look at the picture what can you see in the picture? Yes, people are probably moving a stone. So what is our passage going to talk about? Probably a earthquake. Now, I need you to read the passage quickly and then check your guess. so did you guess it right?Step 3: Reading for main ideasThe passage talks about a earthquake. Very good, a terrible earthquake. Where did it happen? In tangshan. And what else did you know? Great damage, the help of whole nation, the city has revived. So can you summarize the the main idea by organizing it into a complete sentence? Yes, a terrible earthquake hit Tangshan causing great damage, but with the help of the whole nation, the city has revived. Well done, ok, so now could you tell me the meaning of the revive? Yes, it means become better strong and active again, OK? So now during the rest of the lesson when you come across new words, you don't have to stop and look them up in the dictionary. The context will probably help you understand the meaning of the new words, OK?So now I need you to match them idea with each paragraph, can you do it now?So paragraph one goes to D. Strange signs before the earthquake and paragraph two goes to the happening of the earthquake. Paragraph three, the destructive effects and paragraph four the rescue work. The last paragraph the revival of the city. Well done, so now can you tell me how is the passage developed? So now here are some keys. Before happening of the earthquake and the results and the rescue work and survival. Yes,we know that the passage is developed in time order and now this time let's focus on the first three paragraphs to understand more about the earthquake. Now, could you please read paragraph one to three again and finish the following tasks?Step 4: Reading for details/thinkingNow, can you describe the strange things before the earthquake according to the pictures? Yes,yes, please. Yes, we can say the water in the well rose and fell and deep cracks appeared in the well walls. Yes, good and at least one well had some smelly gas coming out of it. The pigs were too nervous to eat good and the dogs refused to go inside the buildings. This one, yes, please. The mice ran out of the fields looking for a place to hide and the fish jumped out of water and what can we say in the sky? Yes, bright light, and also we can hear loud noise, yes, well done.So in the first paragraph, the author describes some strange signs before the earthquake. So do you think they were warning signs and why? They were warning signs because they are very strange and abnormal. Well done and especially the wells. Yes, it shows something terrible or something wrong must be happening under the ground. Well done, thank you for your answers. And how do you understand the cities one million people were asleep as usual? Any ideas? Yes, probably because the people didn't know anything about the earthquake. They didn't get prepared and it's the peace before storm. Something terrible will be happening. OK ,so a terrible earthquake was about to happen. Now activity two. Here are the damage the earthquake caused, shall we check the answers? The first one?How to correct it? It caused a huge crack of eight kilometers long and thirty meters wide. From this sentence, we know that the earthquake can cause damage to nature itself. OK,number two, true or false? False, not forty thousand but four hundred thousand people were killed. So the earthquake killed lives thousands of lives, including people and animals. Number three. FALSE, not one third but seventy five percent of the factories. And number four, true, most bridges and railway tracks were destroyed and became useless good. So from these two sentences we know that the earthquake can damage human constructions. What about number five? It is true. People who survived were greatly shocked and at loss. So we know that the earthquake had psychological influence on people alive. So what about number six? True. The earthquake was one of the most deadly of the twentieth century. So what's the meaning of deadly? Yes, causing great deaths. So now I need you to think what caused the most casualties? And what can we do to reduce the death? Probably because people knew nothing about the earthquake. And probably because people didn't get prepared and probably because most of the buildings fell down. A。
