A student acts out the meaning of a word on a vocabulary card, and other students try to guess the word. New Concepts1. Happy, sad.DEMONSTRATEDemonstrate the meaning of happy and sad. For example, as a class, look at the pictures in the student book. Use facial expressions to show the meaning of each word as you say it. Some students find it much easier to talk about personal topics, such as feeling, using a puppet because it seems as though the puppet is talking, not the students.ROLE-PLAYIntroduce phrases that inquire about another’s feelings by leading the class through dialogues such as:Teacher: How are you?Class: Fine, thanks. How are you?Teacher: I feel happy / sad. (Use facial expressions.)Teacher: How do you feel?Class: I am ___. /I feel___.Teacher: Are you ___?Class: Yes, I feel___. /No.When you get a no answer to the last question, introduce the phrase No, I’m not. You can also create a no answer. For example:Teacher: How do you feel?Class: I feel happy.Teacher: Are you sad?Class: No, I’m happy.Teacher: Very good! Say this, please: No, I’m no sad.Class: No, I’m not sad.Teacher: Very good. No, I’m not sad. Say it, please, class.Class: No, I’m not sad.Teacher: Very good.STUDENT BOOK: L17 N1Play the audiotape as the students follow in their books, first just listening and then saying the words after the speaker.Then ask the class questions about the dialogues.Use English as much as possible, but translate if necessary. For example:How does Li Ming feel? How are you today?Student 2: I’m happy /sad today.Student 1: How do you feel?Student 2: I feelStudent 1: Are you happy /sad?Student 2: Yes, I’m___. /No, I’m not ___.Teaching TipIf you wish, explain to the class that I’m is a short form of I am. I’m is more frequently by native English speakers.OBSERVEWalk around the class to observe and encourage the students. Remember not to correct too much.2. Head, hand, arm, leg, foot.DEMONSTRATEPoint to parts of your body as you and the class say the words. You can also ask volunteers to stand and point to parts of their bodies.STUDENT BOOK: L17 N2Play the audiotape as the students follow in their books.Teaching TipRemember that flannel board is an effective way to teach body parts. See the directions for flannel boards in “Puppets, Posters and More” at the back of this guide.You can put a picture of a body on the board and attach body parts. To it as you ask What’s this? Song: “If you’re Happy and You Know it.”STUDENT BOOK: L17 N3Introduce the phrases clap your hands, stamp your foot, wave your arm and shake your leg. For example, point to the pictures of Danny in the student book as you say the words. Do these actions yourself as you say the phrases.Demonstrate the meaning of the song. For example, lead the class through the following dialogue:Teacher: Are you happy?Class: (Encourage them to nod and say Yes.)Teacher: If you’re happy, clap your hands! (Clap your hands and encourage the class to follow.)Teacher: If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands!Translate, if necessary.Teach the tune for the first verse of the song.Play the audiotape and ask the students first to listen to the whole song as they follow the pictures in their books.
