An Analysis of the Female Gothicism in Rebecca泰山医学院本科毕业设计（论文）AbstractDaphne du Maurier (1907 - 1989) is a famous English novelist and playwright. Her novels are full of mystery, romance and suspense, as a result, she wins Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award in 1977. Her masterpiece Rebecca makes quite a splash in literary circles when it is first published in 1938. Rebecca is considered to be a classical gothic novel. It shows us the experience of 21-year-old woman who encountered a series of bizarre and terrorist events.This paper aims to analyze Rebecca from the perspective of female gothicism. According to female gothic theory, there are quite a few differences between female gothic novels and male gothic novels in plot and narrative techniques. Female gothic novels are mainly about the heroines’ experience in uncovering the secrets which are kept by masculine society represented by her male relatives. They attach importance to the female characters’ attempt to escape from a confining interior, and end with the evil punished and the good rewarded. In terms of narrative techniques, the female gothic novels focus on the creation of terror and explain the super natural elements. The paper tries to analyze Rebecca from female gothic plot and female gothic narrative techniques in the novel.The paper falls into five chapters. The first part briefly introduces Daphne du Maurier and her Rebecca. The second part focuses on female gothicism and its characteristics. The third part examines Rebecca in female gothic plot. The heroine’s undergoing the transition from an innocent girl to a mature one in the process of disclosing the secret. As to its ending, unlike a happy ending in most of female gothic novels, the novel ends unhappily. The forth part analyze female gothic narrative techniques applied in this novel. The conclusion part summarizes the analyses above, holding that in female gothic novels, women writers establish their own writing tradition. 因其小说充满神秘、浪漫与悬念，她于1977年荣获美国神秘小说作家大师奖她的代表作《吕蓓卡》在1938年一经出版便轰动文坛，成为当时英美两国最畅销小说《吕蓓卡》被认为是一部经典的哥特式小说小说讲述了21岁的无名女子在曼陀丽庄园遭遇的一连串离奇、恐怖的事件本文尝试运用女性哥特的相关理论对《吕蓓卡》加以解读女性哥特理论认为，女性哥特小说在情节、叙事技巧等方面都和男性哥特小说有着较大的差异女性哥特小说的情节多围绕女主人公逐步揭开男性社会向她隐藏的秘密展开该类小说着重描写女性角色尤其是女主人公试图逃离封闭空间所做的努力，最后多以皆大欢喜的完满结局落幕在叙事技巧方面，女性哥特小说更注重渲染恐惧的气氛，常常对文本中出现的超自然现象予以解释本文试从女性哥特式情节、叙事技巧等方面分析《吕蓓卡》中的女性哥特元素论文由五部分构成第一章简介作家及其作品《吕蓓卡》第二章综述女性哥特主义第三章探究《吕蓓卡》女性哥特式情节，即女主人公逐步揭开秘密的过程中所经历的从无知少女到成熟女性的蜕变；结尾部分与大多数女性哥特小说完满的结局不同，该小说结尾并非皆大欢喜第四章研究小说中女性哥特式叙事技巧结论部分在上述分析基础上，提出在女性哥特小说中，女性哥特式主义情节和叙述技巧悖离了传统的哥特模式，从而昭示出女性哥特是独立的文学体裁；女性的哥特经历成为女性在父权社会中个体自我成长的重要催化剂。

As a writer, Du Maurier’s works span almost half a century and cover a broad field such as short story, novel, play, article for journals and magazines and even biography and autobiography. Of all her novels, eight were made into films include Rebecca and many were translated into various languages. In 1969, Daphne du Maurier was awarded the Order of the British Empire Lady. Her novels are full of mystery, romance and suspense, as a result, she wins Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award in 1977.Daphne has been influenced by the 19th gothic novel whose characters are mysterious and horrible.
