4、 Project, Cape Coast Sports Stadium,OVERVIEW OF AQUACULTURE IN GHANA,Aquaculture began under British colonial administration In 1953, first hatcheries were built to create national taste for fish and increase livelihood. Post- independent several policies have been implemented. Launching of numerous cages in Volta lake (largest man made lake in the World) as a result of rapid gain in production. 3-5% contribution to the Gross Domestic Product(GDP)of Ghana The sector has seen significant progress

5、 due to the Government/ World Bank-funded fisheries programme. National aquaculture production grew from over 32,512 MT/y in 2013 to 52,470.49 MT/y in 2016. Aquaculture is projected to hit 72,000 tones in the next 3-5 years. Moderately new business in Ghana. Major cultured species include tilapia, catfish, heterotis. Attempt have been made to introduce other species like Oreochromis macrochir, common carp, sliver carp and tiger prawn Cage culture has shown more sustained growth than pond aquacul

6、ture. In Ghana, fish is processed by smoking, salting, frying, drying and cold storage. Tilapia is mostly sold fresh or stored in cold stores. Catfish is normally smoked before sale,SOME AQUACULTURE PRODUCE IN GHANA,CATFISH,OYSTER,TILAPIA,HETROTIS,CHALLENGES,Related to the management and production within the sector. Limited knowledge modern aquaculture techniques. Lack of efficient inexpensive farm-made feed. Low supply of improved seed Lack of continuing aquaculture policy direction Low fundin

7、g for research Absence of cold storage facilities,FUTURE PROSPECTS,Production of live fish food Marine fish and shellfish culture Integrated fish farming Culture of indigenous fish species Investment in fish feed industry Water bodies abound with many culturable fish, mullet, prawns, oysters, mussels which do better cultured In conclusion, focus should be on creating an environment for private sector to invest in feed and financial sector. Value addition in the production chain of aquaculture product. Focus on research and education for farmers, especially on how to control and prevent growing trend of diseases,CONCLUSION The aquaculture sector has a high potential for job creation since its at a developmental stage.
