9页How to Act as a Good LeaderLord of the Flies, written by William Golding, is a Nobel-winning novel. It is a short but meaningful novel. After reading this novel, I have learnt much about human sublime and evil nature, and I have also learnt more about leading skills from the two main characters, Ralph and Jack. I gradually realize what qualities a qualified leader should possess. In this paper I will focus on exploring how to act as a good leader. How to act as a good leader? There are many standard answers given by scholars. According to Peter•F•Drucker, a good leader should grasp the organization's mission and mobilize people around to finish this mission by struggle. A good leader should also be honesty, care about the feelings of the others, and not for the interests of an individual or a small group and put the needs of all in the first place. Otherwise people would not follow him/her, said by John Kurt.As far as I'm concerned, a good leader should grasp the correct direction to solve problems; he/she also possesses the ability to keep a group well organized. Besides, the sense of self-reflection is an essential quality a good leader should be equipped with. I learn these practical leading skills from Ralph and Jack.A good leader should grasp the correct direction to solve problems, which means that he/she should get the key point of the problems and make the right decision. Ralph insists on keeping the fire alive. He thinks of the fire as the way to salvation. While Jack's insist on hunting pigs can provide everyone on that deserted island with meat. Meat can support them enough nutrition. But he never considers if he was rescued and sent back home, he would be taken good care of by his family; he could eat meat without hunting pigs exhaustively. We can see clearly that Ralph makes the right decision to set up fire waiting for being rescued when they are trapped on the isolated island. So I think that Ralph manages well in grasping the key mission. A good leader should get the key point of problems swiftly and give the right order in time when problems arise. The ability to keep a group well organized is necessary for a good leader. Keeping a group well organized means not only assigning tasks properly, but also keeping the unity within the group. At the beginning, Ralph starts as a leader, in the novel, to the whole group of stranded kids and keeps them organized by giving them an occupation that will benefit them all. He assigns Samneric the job of keeping the fire alive, Jack and his choir as the hunters, and Piggy as a care-taker of littluns. But Ralph lacks the skills to deal with his friends, so till the end, only Piggy and Simon are still loyal to Ralph. On the contrary, Jack wins support from all the other children. Jack organizes all the hunters to hunt a pig successfully and shares meat with all the children including Ralph. He plays and dances with all the children happily when eating meat. Also, Jack shows his braveness in against the "beasts". He once said that, "If there is a beast, we'll hunt it down!" Littluns all feel they've been protected well by Jack after hearing so. So all the other children are willing to support their new leader, Jack, and obey his orders. We can conclude that Ralph does assign all the necessary work properly, but he fails to deal with others correctly. Jack maintains the unity of all the children. He organizes his hunting group well and becomes a real new leader. Clearly to see, keeping a group well organized is essential for a good leader.A good leader should be equipped with the sense of self-reflection, which means realizing his/her faults and correct them in time. Ralph lacks the sense of self-reflection, so does Jack. We readers all know that they both have shortcomings and have made mistakes. But they themselves just cannot realize what mistakes they have made. Ralph is too stubborn. He considers it ridiculous for Jack to hunt pigs without keeping the fire alive, just ignoring children's physiological needs for meat. Eating fruits every day is far from enough if they want to survive on the isolated island. Huang Wenrong (a senior student in Nanjing University of Technology) thinks that Ralph is tactless in solving problems and personal relationship. when Jack brings Samneric away from the fire in order so that they could help them hunt. While Samneric are gone, the fire starts to diminish while a ship is in view. Ralph seeing this is carried by rage and starts an argument with Jack. He was not able to manage the conflict between him and Jack, just causing Jack to overturn the whole group.Jack's fault lies in how little he comprehends the meaning of the fire. He pays little attention to being rescued. He only believes that they should have fun and do whatever they want to do. We can assume the result that nobody in his group will be rescued, that all of them stay on the island, waiting for death when all the food runs out. According to Chu Ti。
