新概念英语第二册第81课Lesson 81 Escape 脱逃    When he had killed the guard, the prisoner of war quickly dragged him into the bushes. Working rapidly in the darkness, he soon changed into the dead man's clothes. Now, dressed in a blue uniform and with a rifle over his shoulder, the prisoner marched boldly up and down in front of the camp. He could hear shouting in the camp itself. Lights were blazing and men were running here and there: they had just discovered that a prisoner had escaped. At that moment, a large black car with four officers inside it, stopped at the camp gates. The officers got out and the prisoner stood to attention and saluted as they passed. When they had gone, the driver of the car came towards him. The man obviously wanted to talk. He was rather elderly with grey hair and clear blue eyes. The prisoner felt sorry for him, but there was nothing else he could do. As the man came near, the prisoner knocked him to the ground with a sharp blow. 对于前后句中所表示的同一个人，汉语的习惯是按先后顺序：前面提到某个人时会用具体的名词来表示，后面再提到时才会用人称代词来指代说明而英文的习惯是，对于句中的主语，要按主从句的顺序：用名词表示的主语要放在主句中，而从句中的主语要用代词，即使从句是放在句首的位置注意，句中的宾语还是按先后的顺序来的因此这句话不会写成：When he had killed him, the prisoner of war quickly dragged the guard into the bushes.2)从句中用的是过去完成时(had killed),用来强调从句中的这个动作先于主句的动作发生并完成如果前后句的动作顺序比较明显的话，也可以不用过去完成时，而直接用一般过去时(killed)3)prisoner的意思是“囚犯”；而prisoner of war指的是在交战中被俘虏的人员，即“战俘”，并且常常缩写成POW主句中的动词drag其含义为“沿着某个表面(尤其是地面)用力地拖/拉某物”(to pull or be pulled with force, especially along the ground or other surface)。

这句话描述的是那个越狱的战俘把卫兵的尸体使劲地移开的场面，因此用drag可以表现出费力拖拽的神态，显然要比用pull更加形象生动4)bush用作可数名词时的意思是“灌木”，经常用复数形式bushes(灌木丛)例如：The bush was planted late in the season. 这灌木是在这个季节末期才栽种的Trees and bushes grew down to the water's edge.树和灌木丛一直长到了水边bush还可以用来表示“(未开发的)荒野地带、丛林地带”(此时，只能用单数形式)例如：     The jeep was found lying in thickbush.    人们发现吉普车翻倒在一处茂密的丛林里关于这个词，还有一个比较常见的习语：beat about the bush，意思是“说话拐弯抹角、避免说到重点或主题”例如：Tell me the truth. 1) 句中的work在这里不是“(在工作场所)工作”的意思，而是指“干活(付出时间和精力去做某件事)”例如：  Linda spends all her time working on the garden.  琳达把所有时间都花在打理花园上   While I was working on my letter the telephone rang.   我正在写信，铃响了2) 句中有个常用的介词短语in the darkness，意思是“在黑暗中”例如：     I saw a figure approaching in the darkness.    我看见黑暗中有个人影走过来这个介词短语在这里可以替换成in the dark这个短语也可以表示“在黑暗中”这种含义这两个短语的区别在于，dark除了“黑暗”以外，还可以用来表示“夜晚或日暮”；另外，in the dark还可以指“对…一无所知”因此，在表示这两种含义时，短语中的dark就不能用darkness来替换了例如(以下两个例句中的dark不能替换成darkness)：     They will come home before dark.    他们将在日落前回家。

1) 句中的dressed在这里用作形容词，因此dressed in a blue     uniform是个形容词短语，用来表示主语的状态dressed用作形容词时，含义为“穿着衣服的、穿戴整齐的”；如果后面接介词in+表示某种服装的名称/颜色，则指“穿着某种服装”或“穿着某种颜色的服装”例如： I can't go to the door. I'm not dressed yet. 我没法去开门我还没穿好衣服呢He went into his bedroom to get dressed.  他进卧室穿衣服The bride was dressed in white.       新娘身穿白色礼服He was casually dressed in jeans and a T-shirt. 他穿着很随便的牛仔裤和T恤衫2) with a rifle…his shoulder是个介词短语语法上把这种结构叫做“复合机构”关于“复合结构”的详细解释，大家可参看“问题与解答”。
