、Sir William, may I have the last peach?William:William: Of course.Mei:Mei: Thank you. Can you get me a glass of water? We all agree that the criminals are guilty. But we cannot agree if they should be hanged for what they did. A lot of innocent people died in the war. They can only rest in peace when these criminals are punished by the death penalty. Mr. Bernard, you were saying that a country cannot be truly civilized until it has abolished the death penalty.Bernard: Absolutely right.Mei:Mei: I
、 can agree with you, to an extent. But I have doubts.Bernard: Mei, I would be happy to discuss it.Mei:Mei: I can see, civilization is important to you. But what about life? Do you value life, Mr. Bernard?Bernard:Bernard: I dont think that I need to answer that question. You should already know the answer perfectly well.Mei:Mei: I think you will not deny that life is precious, as man lives only once. This glass represents human beings; the water in it, civilization. Forgive my rudeness. Civilizat
、ion is a product of man. There cant be civilization, when there is no human being. Mr. Bar?Bar:Bar: Mei, sit down please. You want to discuss Buddhism(佛教)with me?Mei:Mei: I know very little about Buddhists. But I respect them a lot. As a child, I learned from my parents that Buddhists teach people to do good, and not evil. Is that right?Bar:Bar: Thats the fundamental idea.Mei:Mei: So Buddhism(佛教)rewards goodness; does it punish evil?Bar:Bar: Yes, but Buddhism says that punishment is carried out
、in the next life.Mei:Mei: That means if someone does evil in this lifetime, they will pay for it in the next, right?Bar:Bar: Thats right.Mei:Mei: Then whats going to stop the crimes, here and now? Can Buddha forbid Japan to start another war? You think Hidakigoja believed in Buddha?Bar:Bar: Buddha can help him believe. Buddha will love him and forgive him for everything he has done. In the end, Buddha will embrace everyone. Thats how his power works.Mei:Mei: Thats far away in the future. Like Bu
、ddha, we all long for a world thats noble. No crimes, but this longing has done nothing to forbid any of the evil that came out in this war. I do not question Buddhas teachings. But I doubt very much the ability of human beings to follow Buddha to his utopia. Buddha said, “Belief makes a dream come true.” But what if these criminals dont believe in Buddha at all? I agree with Jesus in the Christian Bible, “Give to Caesar what is Caesars. And to God what is Gods.” Mr. Bar, why have you come to he
、re? The judges from eleven countries are here to determine if crimes are committed. If so, punish them according to law.Bar:Bar: Mei, dont try to persuade me anymore. I still think my viewpoint is correct.Mei:Mei: Mr. Bar, Ive no desire to contradict you either. I leave you with an old Greek saying, “Destiny knows better than any of us.”William:William: Well, I can see that I am next. Please.Mei:Mei: So, William, and my fellow judges, you are all legal experts. So I invite you toconsider this qu
、estion together; what is law? What is its function? After over two years and eighty hundred and seventeen long hearings, we have finally determined the criminals are guilty. Yet in the past week, we have gone over the questions of civilization and religion. Gentlemen, this is not a university classroom, this is not a temple. This is a court of law. We should be focusing on the full death penalty for such serious crimes. In my opinion, religion tells us what we should do to reach heaven, on the o
、ther hand, the law lays down clearly what we should not do or we will be punished. By death, if crimes deserve it. This is law. This is why I insist on the death penalty. In expanding its territory and plundering another countrys resources, Japan has caused death on many innocent people. A soldier; robbed, raped(被强奸), tortured, and slaughtered millions of Chinese, Filipinos, Englishmen, Americans, and people of many other nationalities. Isnt it enough to justify the death sentence? If the law cannot punish Japan, and the criminals, in this severest way, who can guarantee that Japan will not start another war? Who could guarantee that Japan would not invade another country? Who dares guarantee that Japans militarism will not rise again? Which one of you dares make these guarantees? All that I want to say, what I need to say, Ive said. Let us cast our vote now. For the sake of those who died in the war, so they can rest in peace. Please be prudent. Because they are watching us.
