      如用之,那么吾从先进〞  孔子说:“先学习礼乐而后做官的是未曾有过爵禄的一般人;先有了官位而后学习礼乐的是卿大夫的子弟论语十二章原文及翻译假如要我选用人才,那我主张选用先学习礼乐的人〞〔杨伯峻今译〕  1.Confuciussaid,informertimes,thosewhoexcelledintheknowledgeofproprietyandmusicare(bymenofthepresentage)esteemedmererustics—butinthepresentday,thosewhoareversedintheknowledgeofproprietyandmusic,areesteemedestablishedScholars.Inpractice,Ifollowthoseofformerages.  2.TheMastersaid,“Themenofformertimesinthemattersofceremoniesandmusicwererustics,itissaid,whilethemenoftheselattertimes,inceremoniesandmusic,areaccomplishedgentlemen.IfIhaveoccasiontousethosethings,Ifollowthemenofformertimes.〞  3.Confuciusremarked,“Menofthelastgeneration,inmattersoftheartsandrefinement,areconsideredtohavebeenrude;menofthepresentgenerationare,inthosematters,consideredpolite.ButinmypracticeIprefermenofthelastgeneration.〞  4.TheMastersaid,“‘Onlycommonpeoplewaittilltheyareadvancedinritualsandmusic(beforetakingoffice).Agentlemancanaffordtogetuphisritualsandmusiclateron.’EvenifIacceptedthissaying,Ishouldstillbeonthesideofthosewhogetonwiththeirstudiesfirst.〞  5.TheMastersaid,“Asfarastheritesandmusicareconcerned,thediscipleswhowerethefirsttocometomewererusticswhilethosewhocametomeafterwardsweregentlemen.Whenitcomestoputtingtheritesandmusictouse,Ifollowtheformer.〞  6.Confuciussaid,“Thosewholearntheproprietiesandmusicbeforetheytakegovernmentpostsareofhumbleorigins.Thosewholearntheproprietiesandmusicaftertheytakegovernmentpostsareofnobleorigins.IfIwereaskedtochoose,Iwouldchoosetheformer.〞  7.TheMastersaid,“Thefirsttocometoobservingritualpropriety(li礼)andplayingmusic(yue乐)werethesimplefolk;thosewhocamelatterwerethenobility.Inputtingritualandmusictouse,Iwouldusethosewhocametothemfirst.〞  8.TheMastersaid,“Thosewhofirstlearntherulesofproprietyandmusicbeforetakingofficearemenofpopulaceorigin;thosewholearntherulesofproprietyandmusicaftertakingofficearemenofaristocraticorigin.IfIweretousethem,Iwouldchoosetheformer.〞  9.Thevillagers,saidtheMaster,performedritualandmusicbeforetownsfolk.SoIwouldemploythevillagersinpracticingritualandmusic.  10.Confuciussaid,“Anyonewholearntetiquetteandmusicfirstandthenlookedforofficialpostswasacommonpeople.Anyonewholookedforofficialpostsandthenlearntetiquetteandmusicwasanaristocrat.Iflhadtomakeanappointment,I’dliketochooseacommonpeople.〞  Neverworryabouthowyouwillcontactme.I’llgivemyemailaddressnexttimeinacleverwayforyoutowritetomeforthepresentofthebooksolongasyouaretheluckytop10whocorrectlyguessit.。
