When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield. 这句话里有两个时间状语从句， 分别由连词when和 while 引导。

其区分为： （1）when“当…时”, 可表示“点时间”或“段时间”主句和从句的动作可同时发生也可先后分别发生； 谓语动词可以是短暂动词， 也可以是连续动词 When he called, I was having a bath. 他打时， 我正在洗澡 When she was sleeping, I got his phone call. 她在睡觉时， 我接到了他的 （2）while只表示“段时间”主句动作发生在从句动作的过程之中； 从句谓语动词是连续动词或表示状态的动词， 强调同时进展的两个连续性动作相伴随而发生； 常对同类动作进展比拟 Please write while I read. 我念的时候请大家写下来 （同时） I feel safe while I am with you. 与你在一起时， 我觉得安全 （时段中， 同时） I was reading my history textbook while he was playing the guitar. 我复习历史功课的时候他却在那儿弹吉他。

（转折， 比照） （3）还有一个常用的连词： as， 意为“边…边…”或“与…同时”， 重在表示两个动作的同时性， 或两个动作在进展变化中的状况 As I looked, the tiger came near. 就当我看的时候， 老虎走近了 （同时） As I get older, I get happier. 随着年龄的增长， 我越来越欢乐了 （伴随进展） 。
