Profile of skills and competences Composition of the qualification The qualification modules that are compulsory for all candidates are cleaning and disinfection of equipment and the production of cleaning and disinfection services; cleaning, checking, and packaging of equipment and the production of packaging services; sterilisation of equipment and the production of sterilisation services. In addition, the candidates must select one of the following qualification modules: cleaning and disinfection of oral health care equipment and the production of sharpening services; a module from the Specialist Qualification in Equipment Maintenance, a module from a vocational upper secondary qualification; a module from another Further Qualification; a module from another Specialist Qualification. Vocational skills and competences required for completion of the qualification - the candidates are skilled in working in environments where cleaning and disinfection services are provided - they know how to comply with hygiene practices and work in service situations of the cleaning and disinfection field - they know how to receive, handle, clean and disinfect examination and treatment equipment and handle and sort wastes - they are able to guide both employees and students in equipment maintenance - they are able to work in service situations and working environments related to packaging and receive, dry, check and assemble examination and treatment equipment - they have skills in selecting packaging materials and methods for examination and treatment equipment, packaging equipment and sealing the package, as well as sorting and delivering packaged equipment for sterilisation and distribution - they know how to receive packaged equipment, select a sterilisation method and programme for packaging and load equipment packaging into a steam steriliser - they are able to use an autoclave, supervise and monitor steam sterilisation, and test the daily operative condition of a steam autoclave - they know how to demonstrate sterilisation methods, functioning of the equipment and processes - they are able to check the results of sterilisation, sort products and deliver them to the customer (*) Explanatory note This document is designed to provide additional information about the specified certificate and does not have any legal status in itself. For more information on transparency, visit www.cedefop.eu.int/transparency © European Communities 2002 - candidates having selected the optional module on cleaning and disinfection of oral health care equipment and the production of sharpening services know, among other things, how to sharpen, clean and disinfect oral health care equipment Range of occupations accessible to the holder of the certificate Qualification holders may work as instrument technicians in the social welfare and health care sector, for example in equipment maintenance centres, surgical and anaesthetic wards, endoscopy units, laboratories, intensive care, dialysis and maternity wards, outpatient clinics and oral health care units. In addition, instrument technicians are needed in the equipment maintenance departments in the pharmaceutical, food and chemical industry as well as in veterinary surgeries, veterinary hospitals and units with laboratory animals.
