He also is a national hero in Greece.,,,Contents,Byron’s Position in English History,The most outstanding representative of English Romanticism; One of the most influential poets of his time; influence on European poetry, music, novel, opera, and painting, and the progressive poets in many other countries;,,patents,his father was a captain nicknamed “Mad Jack“, who had squandered away the money of the poet's mother and then deserted her, finally died deep in debt when he was a child. his mother was a Scottish noble woman, Catherine Gordon, a descendant of the King of Scotland. She was the second wife of “Mad Jack“.,Early life,Born into an ancient aristocratic family on 22 January 1788. Though he was born lame, he was good at sports, especially at swimming; Inherited the title of a baron and a large estate from his great-uncle at the age of ten; Moves with his mother to Newstead Abbey, near Nottingham In 1801 he was sent to Harrow, where he remained until July 1805. Began work on Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage.,life and Career,Portugal,Spain,turkey,Greece,The experience in Europe provided him with poetical material and his creative work soon reached a new stage,The publication in 1812 of the first two cantos of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, a poem narrating his travels between 1809 and 1811 in Europe, brought Byron fame. He then said: “I awoke one morning and found myself famous.”,life and Career,In 1815 Byron got married to Anna Isabella Milbanke. it proved an unhappy marriage. A year later, his wife left him and refused to come back. Rumors about his incestuous relationship with his half-sister Augusta and doubts about his sanity led to his being abused and decried. So in anger and disgust, Byron left England in 1816 and never returned.,life and Career,life and Career,Byron first went to Switzerland, where he made acquaintance with Shelley. He next established residence in Venice, where in the three years from 1816 to 1819 he produced, among other works, the verse drama Manfred (1817), the first two cantos of Don Juan (1818—1819), and the fourth and final canto of Childe Harold (1818). In Italy(1816-1823), Byron was reunited with Shelley and made acquaintance with Countess Guiciolli, whose father and brother were ardent Italian patriots.,Byron in Greece (1821-1824),At the news of the Greek revolt against the Turks, Byron not only gave the insurgent Greeks financial help but plunged himself into the struggle for the national independence of that country. He had finally sold Newstead Abbey. Because of several month's hard work under bad weather, Byron fell ill and died. Such a hero is a proud, rebellious figure of noble origin. Passionate and powerful, he is to right all the wrongs in a corrupt society, and he would fight single-handedly against all the misdoings. Thus this figure is a rebellious individual against outworn social systems and conventions.
