Morgan Spurlock, an independent film maker from the USA, decided to conduct an experiment to find out, using himself as the experimental guinea pig, and to make a movie of his experiences while he did so. To begin with, 32 year old Spurlock was a fit and healthy man, 188 cm tall, and weighing 84 kg. His good health was certified by three doctors from different disciplines, and a personal fitness trainer, and he asked these professionals to track his progress during the next thirty days. The rules of his self-designed experiment said that everything he ingested for a month had to come from the fast food chain. He had to sample every item on their menu, and he had to upgrade, or ‘supersize’ his meal every time this was suggested. At the same time, he reduced his exercise to walking only about 3 km in total per day, on the basis of the fact that this is the average distance walked by American citizens. At the beginning of his month long trial, there is a fascinating but disgusting scene in the movie where he eats his first supersize meal in a car park outside a restaurant in New York. This meal included a large burger, supersize fries and a huge soft drink, and the audience watches him eating and eating, feeling increasingly uncomfortable until, at the end of the meal, he vomits (呕吐) in the car park.Five days into the trial, the diet had already begun to have an effect on his health. He had gained 4.5 kg, was feeling depressed and suffering from headaches. He gained a total of 11 kg over the whole month of the trial, and his health deteriorated significantly during this time. By day 21, he had heart palpitations (心悸), but, despite the fact that he was advised to give up at this point in case he permanently damaged his health, he continued until day 30 and finished the experiment.During the experiment, Spurlock ate as much fast food in one month as nutritionists say we should eat in eight years, at the rate of one fast food meal a month. It took him over a year to lose the weight that he gained, and some doctors suggested that he might have done irreversible damage to his health.1510152025Intensive Reading| 高一年级·目标班·教师版| 第 7 讲 3Activity 1 – Information SectionUseful Words supersize (v.) The message is very clear; fast food chains are more interested in profits than health. However, while it is undoubtedly true that eating three fast food meals a day is not recommended, this message may be a little simplistic. Some doctors have said that some people appear to be more sensitive to the effects of a high fat, high carbohydrate (碳水化合物) diet than others, and that Spurlock may have been a particularly sensitive individual. In addition, no fast food company advocates that we eat a solid diet of its products, and some have moved to offering healthier options such as salads, and lighter low calorie meals. Overall, I found the movie interesting, but, perhaps like the diet, it was not a balanced meal!(550 words)3035| 高一年级·目标班·教师版| 第 7 讲4While ReadingActivity 2Answer the following questions.1.
