However the progression of technology has also seen a significant rise in the number of distribution of pirated copies. As a result of piracy; the music industry has fallen victim with losses in millions of dollars every year. According to Graham, et al., (2004) global piracy now account for over $ 4.8 billion. The purpose of this report is to effectively identify the various components of music piracy and look at the issue form both the perspective of the general public and the music industry. In addition the report will also provide an insight into the methods put in place by the music industry in an aim to curb piracy.Piracy can be described as a deliberate, criminal act which violates the copyright of commercial material such as an audio CD. For the case of the music industry; piracy can be segmented into four areas:Physical music piracy: this refers to process of obtaining music content without the permission of the actual artist or record label and then proceeding to create and distributing mass quantities of illegal copies. Reports have shown that the actual physical packaging of the pirated copies may be similar in nature to that of the original material; in most cases the copies would be in the form of a compilation of different artists in order to cater towards a specific genre of music or possibly a in the form of a "greatest hits" collection of one artist (IFPI, 2010).Counterfeits: is a form of physical piracy; unauthorized copies are created and packaged in cases exactly similar to that of the original. The extent of the duplication is precise; the copies would also have trademarks and logos in place (IFPI, 2010).Bootlegs: Is the unauthorized process of recording live performances either from concerts or televised events (IFPI, 2010).Internet Piracy: is the process of obtaining unauthorized musical material from various sources available on the internet.Another aspect to illegal duplication of musical material is the fact that such an act also violates the artist's intellectual property; which refers to the invention or creation by an individual in their respective field of work (WIPO, 2010). One form of intellectual property is copyright; which is put in place in the aim of preventing the unauthorized copying as well as distribution of protected material.Literature Review To obtain information relating to piracy and intellectual property; research was done through the internet and obtained from two websites. The first one known as copyrightawre.co.uk; which is maintained and controlled by the Industry Trust and the second website is known as IFPI.com. The websites provide an insight into concepts behind intellectual property and in IFPI.com; the website provides detailed information on the different forms of piracy in the music industry. The main aim of the research stage of the report would be to identify the potential possibilities and influences for the general public to make purchases of illegally obtained copyrighted material. Two journals were uncovered through an online library database known as Athens. The first journal known as Digital piracy of MP3s: consumer and ethical predispositions by Steven Lysonski and Srinivas Durvasula; focuses on the process of obtaining information relating to illegal downloading of pirated music by asking a set of selected question in the form of a survey to a group of college students. Lysonski and Durvasula (2008) write about the student's general attitude towards piracy. The results of the survey clearly indicate the fact that the students strongly believe that the act of downloading pirated music is not immoral; at the same time a majority of the answers do reflect the fact that the students are aware of the potential legal actions that could be imposed on them if they were caught by the authorities. According to Lysonski and Durvasula (2008) the students feel safe while downloading music illegally as they could go unrecognized or anonymous and download music without being caught; the authors proceed to state that education programs in the field of ethics and understanding the full impact of music piracy on various sections of the music industry should made available. The point of providing education programs to students is further explained in the second journal known as Stop Piracy with Edifi。
