This is the emotional and social sense of self that every person has and expects everyone else to recognize.2.•In 1978,Brown and Levinson published thebook Politeness: Some Universals in LanguageUsage, in which they developed Goffman's(1976) notion of face into the well-known Face Theory(FT for short).3.Face public self-image （个人形象）Positive face (积极面子）Negative face （消极面子）The Face Theory4.Positive face: the positive consistent self-image that people have and want to be appreciated and approved of by at least some other people.积极面子积极面子是指希望得到别人的赞同和喜爱是指希望得到别人的赞同和喜爱Positive face 5.Negative face : the rights to territories, freedom of action and freedom from imposition; essentially the want that your actions be not impeded by others. 消极面子消极面子是指不希望别人强加于自己是指不希望别人强加于自己, ,自己的行为不受自己的行为不受别人的干涉或阻碍别人的干涉或阻碍. .Negative face 6.Face-threatening act (FTA)An utterance or action which threatens a person’s public self-image or face is known as a face-threatening act. Eg.Close the door.Some speech acts have the nature of face-threatening.
