Giving the right complime nt can not only serve the social relati on ship, but also maintain the harmony between speakers. But with the evolution of the times and the accumulati on of cultural backgro und, the com muni cati on betwee n people is no tlimited to the literal meaning of the words, and the complime ntaryIan guage begi ns to derive meaning bey ond praise merely.The study respectively selects 42 complime ntary senten ces from the Chin ese and 58 fromAmerica n talk shows Roast and Comedy Cen tral Roast as the object of study, based on Hall 's high-c on text and low-c on text cultural theory, appl ying the research methods of comparative an alysis to record three categories of complime nts in Chin ese and America n in terpers onal com muni cati on, and summarize the differe nt kinds of the complime ntary Ian guage that un der differe nt circumsta nces bel onging to the cultural con text.This thesis studies Chin ese and Western complime ntary Ian guage from a new perspective, and the n reflects the high-con text and low-con text cultural theory.
