3. die, dead, dying与与death 【辨析】(1)die意为“死”,是非延续性动词,不能和时间段连用 (2)dead为形容词,意为“死的;去世的”,如果要表达“死了多长时间”,则用“have been dead+时间段”或died+时间段+ago如: The cat has been dead for two hours. =The cat died two hours ago. 这只猫死了两个小时了 (3)dying为形容词,意为“垂死的;要死的”如: a dying dog 一只快要死的狗 (4)death是die的名词形式,意为“死;死亡”如: ①I feel very sad when I think of his death. 一想到他的死我就感到难过 ②His father’s death made him very sad. 他父亲的死使他非常难过4. alive, living与与lively 【辨析】(1)alive意为“活着的”,侧重说明生与死之间的界限,既可指人也可指物,可用来作表语、后置定语或宾补。
如: No man alive is greater than he. 在活着的人当中没有人比他更伟大 【延伸】有些形容词通常作表语,常见的有:well, ill(生病的)以及以a-开头的部分形容词,如:afraid, alike, alive, alone, asleep, awake等如: ①Even when you are asleep, you are using energy. 即使你睡着了,你仍然在消耗能量 ②I hope you aren’t ill. You don’t look very well. 但愿你没病,不过你的脸色不太好 这些形容词也可以作定语,只不过作定语时要后置如: Tom was the only boy awake at that time. 汤姆是那时唯一醒着的男孩 (2)living意为“活的”,强调说明尚在人间或健在,可用来指人或物,用作定语或表语如: English is a living language. 英语是一门活的语言 【延伸】living的相关短语:the living活着的人们;make a living谋生;make a/one’s living by doing通过做……谋生。
(3)lively意为“活泼的;活跃的;充满生气的”,可作定语、表语或宾补,既可指人,又可指物如: ①Jenny is a lively girl. 詹妮是个活泼的女孩 ②Everything is lively here. 这里的一切都生机勃勃1. It is more than an adventure story. 它不仅仅是一个冒险故事它不仅仅是一个冒险故事 【点拨】此句句型为:...more than+名词,意为“……不仅仅是……”如: ①Modern science is more than a large amount of information. 现代科学不仅仅是大量的信息 ②He is more than a lecturer. He is a writer too. 他不仅仅是一个演说家他还是一位作家 ③We need more than material wealth to build our country. 建设我们的国家,不仅仅需要物质财富 【延伸】(1)句型“...more than+形容词”意为“很……;非常……”。
如: I am more than glad to help you. 很高兴能够帮助你 (2)句型“...more than+(that)从句”意为“……简直不……;……远非……”(其后通常与情态动词can连用)如: ①That is more than I can understand. 那远非我所能懂的 ②That is more than I can tell. 那事我实在不明白 ③The heat there was more than he could stand. 那儿的炎热程度简直不是他所能忍受的 (3)句型“...more than+数词”意为“……以上;不止……”如: ①I have known David for more than 20 years. 我已经认识大卫二十多年了 ②More than one person has made this suggestion. 不止一人提过这个建议 2. ...it is thought to be one of the greatest American stories. ……人们认为这本书是美国最好的小说之一。
