IntroductionStrange Stories from a Chinese Studio and English Gothic novels are referred to as the ghost novel. Both of them include horror, mystery, supernatural phenomenon, misfortune, death, haunted houses, and family curses. Gothic novel as one branch of the English literature and the father of horror movies origins from The Castle of Otranto(1764). More importantly, it leads habitually with darkness and horror. Gothic Novel swept the whole of Europe between late 18th and early 19th century, and developed into a tradition and became one of the genres in fiction writing; not a few contemporary and modern English and American writers are profoundly influenced by it.Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio or Liao zhai Zhi yi is a collection of nearly five hundred mostly supernatural tales written by Pu Songling in Classical Chinese during the early Qing Dynasty. Pu borrows from a folk tradition of oral storytelling to put to paper a series of captivating, colorful stories, where the boundary between reality and the odd or fantastic is blurred. The cast of characters include vixen spirits, ghosts, scholars, court officials, Taoist exorcists and beasts. Moral purposes are often inverted between humans and the supposedly degenerate ghosts or spirits, resulting in a satirical edge to some of the stories. Ghosts and spirits are often bold and trustworthy, while humans are on the other hand weak, indecisive and easily manipulated, reflecting the author's own disillusionment with his society.Although the two types of ghost novel, one is in the Western Hemisphere, the other is in the eastern hemisphere. They have shown the preferences of the surreal ghost theme, indicating that the literature spanning between different cultures also exist some common aesthetics and art performance. They use the common theme —“body and soul“, “crime and punishment“, “death and resurrection“. In fact, there are also differences—their vivid and different characters. Because of their vivid characters, the depth of detail across the novels, the powerfully imaginative plot and the sheer verve of the writing make them a masterpiece of its genre.
