OFlaherty(18961984)was born in 1896 in a remote village in Ireland. His family were not well off.The Irish language was widely spoken in the area, and in the OFlaherty household both English and Irish were used.He left school in 1917 and joined the Irish Guards. He served on the Western Front, where he was injured, and it is possible that the shell shock he suffered may have been responsible for the mental illness which became apparent in 1933.Liam OFlaherty is one of the most important modern Anglo-Irish authors along with James Joyce. His works combine brutal naturalism, psychological analysis, poetry, and biting satire with an abiding respect for the courage and persistence of the Irish people. He was considered to be a leading figure in the Irish literary renaissance.Major works include:Thy Neighbours Wife(1924)thought to be one of his best. The Informer(1925)for which he had been awarded the 1925 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction.Famine(1937)TextText2.Background“Spring Sowing”is taken from his first collection of short stories, which bears the same title, published in 1924.The story describes the first day of the first spring planting of a newly-married couple against the background of a traditional agricultural country. In Ireland at that time, most people still depended on farming for a living, and the main crop was potatoes.Modern science and technology had not yet caught up with the land. There was little machinery.Practically everything was still done by hand.TextA typical farmer believed in traditional virtues:hard work, simple living, discipline, and above all,a strong sense of responsibility, responsibility for the happiness of his wife, parents, and children. In spite of their almost primitive living and working conditions, however, they also had their joyslove and longings for the futureas does the newly-married couple described here. For Mary and Martin Delaney, this was an extremely important day, because it not only would determine the crop they would harvest in autumn, but would also show what kind of husband and wife they would prove to each other and what kind of family they were going to have. What the author describes here,of course,is largely a thing of the past.A young couple in Ireland today most likely would not get up so early to plant their potatoes.Nor would many Chinese young couples for that matter, not in the cities at least.Todays young husbands probably would not try to prove their manhood by plowing a field 10 hours a day. They would probably be dreaming of things of very different nature. But is what the author describes here totally irrelevant to our life today? Can we really have such a clean break from our past? Can we really dismiss what our grandparents or great grandparents did and experienced as meaningless and useless?TextIt might just be possible that many of our kaleidoscopic changes today are only superficial.Like fashions, they come and go,whereas certain basic values, virtues and beliefs still remain deeply rooted in our cultural legacy. At a time when so many people are obsessed with material comfort and the needs below the belt, stories like“Spring Sowing”may have the sobering effect of a cool breeze,an antidote to the present-day corrupting influences.Text3.StructureI.MartinandMarybegantheirfirstdayofspringsowingasacouple.(paras.14)1.The young couple got up early.(paras.12)2.They were filled with both excitement and
