They, pay moreattention to the definition of subculture that is difficult to have a unified when they studySubculture. In addition, although researches on subculture deriving from the Internet such asSang culture and Fans culture, show a rising trend, the quantities of them are less and none ofresearches about Sang culture and its language, Sang Sayings, based on Dawkins*s memetics.Why Sang Sayings can make a hit in China? How does Sang Sayings transmit in a shortterm? This thesis aims at exploring the causes of the popularity of Sang Sayings in China byadopting qualitative research supplemented with quantitative research and such specificmethod as listing and exemplification. As a significant and important theory for explaining thedevelopment of culture and its language, it is reasonable to utilize memetics to analyze theroots of the popularity of Sang Sayings. In this paper, the author will use the threecharacteristics of meme and strong meme in memetics. What's more, when exploring thecauses of Sang Sayings, the following steps are roughly referred to: Firstly, the definition ofmeme tries to explain why Sang Saying is a meme. Secondly, the characteristics of meme,fidelity, fecundity, and longevity, will be used to explain why it has strong memes. Finally, thefeature of strong meme are utilized to show the reason why Sang Sayings are popular.The combination of Sang Sayings and the memetics theory has decisive significance. Onthe one hand, as the product of the combination of Internet and subculture, Sang Sayings arepopular among youth groups. Unlike other types of subcultures, Sang Sayings which areworthy of attention are more chronological, reflecting the true survival of young people insocial change and expressing their demands. On the other hand, memetics theory, a kind of newtheory about language and culture developments, can be applied to study the development ofSang culture and Sang Sayings and provide a new perspective for cultural research.Chapter 2 Review of LiteratureSang culture, as an emerging subculture, only a few domestics researches cover on thisfield. Moreover, as this cultural phenomenon is generated in China, foreign researchesinvolving this project is quite limited. Therefore, the key words have been expanded intosubculture which relates to Sang culture abroad.2.1 Previous Research of Sang Culture at HomeWhen it comes to Sang culture, domestic scholars mainly focus on its characteristics,causes and influence. As for the characteristics, there is still no clear definition of Sang culturein the academic circle due to Sang culture is a new subculture. Therefore, some scholarsexplain Sang culture by studying its phenomenon and combining its behavioral characteristics.The concept of "Sang culture" can be defined as: "Sang culture", a new kind of youthsubculture form, refers to the language, words or pictures that are currently popular amongyouth groups with decadence, despair, pessimism and other emotions and colors. (Xiao Ziyang& Chang Jinfeng, 2017: 3) With the deepening of studies, the characteristics of Sang areclearer and are added in more factors. For example, Zhu Siliang (2018: 44) believes that "Sangculture0 is a cultural form of collectively negative, decadent, self-denial, self-deprecatingthrough the use of multimedia symbols by the post 90s. In his opinion, it is a kind of youthsubculture, a new form in the Internet era, reflects the prevailing anxiety and prank in thecurrent youth group; Wang Chen (2018: 21) states that Sang culture, a phenomenon of Internetyouth subculture, is popular among young people currently, generated and disseminated insocial networks, using language, words or pictures with tone like decadence, despair,pessimism to express the acceptance of "pain points11 in life but not negative.As for the reasons, the reasons for the appearance and the popularity of Sang cultureinclude external factors and internal factors. For the external factors: in economy, elements likethe slowdown of economy, the "expansion" of labors, the squeezing of technology, the slippingof job opportunities, the limitation of promotion, and highly competitive pressures. Thesefactors increase the uncertainty of the development of young people. (Jiang Jianguo & LiYinxin, 2018: 143-151) In technology, since the coming of the web 2.0 era, social mediarepresented by Weibo and WeChat have played an increasingly important role in the daily lifeof youth.
