T asks Ss to watch the video and finish the exercises on page 29.2. T guides Ss to think of some Chinese festivals that are similar to the three festivals in the video and explore the similarities between them.3. T asks Ss the following questions. • What other festivals around the world do you know about? • How can you know more about festivals and customs around the world?T: To know more about festivals and customs around the world, we can either make friends with foreigners or surf the Internet to find relevant information. We can also learn a lot about local festivals and customs when travelling. Watching related films and TV programmes is very helpful as well. Meanwhile, reading the travel journal is also a window through which we can know more about the outside world. In this period, we will learn about the cultures and customs of foreign countries by following Alex’s travel journal.【设计意图:Welcome to the unit板块直入主题,通过三个外国节日的引入,既开阔学生视野,也带给学生中外文化比较的初体验。
之后通过两个简单问题的讨论,让学生回顾已有知识并活跃思维,为后面的阅读做好铺垫Step 2 Skimming T asks Ss to skim the article and finish exercise A1 on page 32.T: In Alex’s travel journal, he recalled some impressive events. With lots of events coming into our mind, seeking for a timeline is a good option. In A1, we need to put the events in the correct order to better understand the article. 【设计意图:运用skimming的阅读策略,让学生理清两篇travel journal中重要事件的时间轴,这有助于学生把握文章重点,理清文章脉络和逻辑顺序Step 3 Scanning 1. T asks Ss to scan the first travel journal and answer the following questions. • What was the bride wearing at the Indian wedding? She was wearing an eye-catching red silk sari.• What traditional customs left a deep impression on Alex? The bridegroom’s entrance on a beautiful white horse and the part when the bride’s father proudly led his daughter to her husband.• What were the Indian couple’s promises about? The promises were about how they were going to support each other and live together happily.2. T asks Ss to scan the second travel journal and answer the following questions. • Why did Alex go to a street party? To experience the spirit of the Rio Carnival for himself.• How did people celebrate the Carnival at the street party? The band played an energetic samba beat, the dancers twisted and turned, and the crowd began to cheer, clap and sing. The whole group started marching down the street.• What did Alex see and smell as he passed the street stands? He saw an ever-going sea of people, iceboxes of soft drinks and beer, and smelt roasted meat.Step 4 Further readingT: We’ve had a good understanding of the details of the two travel journals. Now we need to think further based on the reading materials. Please answer the following questions. • How is the Indian wedding different from and similar to Chinese weddings you have been to?Like the Indian wedding in Alex’s travel journal, the Chinese wedding I have been to also took place in a hotel. There were a lot of guests too, but most of them were not dressed in formal clothes. The bride’s dress was also different. She wore a traditional Chinese wedding dress in red. There was no dancing after the ceremony at the Chinese wedding. • What does Alex think of the Indian wedding? He thinks it is an experience of a lifetime. He finds the wedding ceremony impressive and extraordinary. • What does Alex think of the Rio Carnival? He must have enjoyed the Rio Carnival very much, as he hardly noticed five hours fly by. He called the Carnival a “happy occasion”. He also described his first day in Rio as “amazing”.• What elements should be included in a travel journal? What’s the most important part of a travel journal? Use some examples in the article to support your idea.A travel journal is supposed to include destination, date, participants, means of transportation, events and feelings etc. Among them, events and feelings are the most crucial parts. For example, the first travel journal has a vivid account of the bridegroom’s arrival, the couple’s promises and other important events of the wedding ceremony. Apart from it, Alex’s empathy and exhaustion after the ceremony are also displayed.【设计意图:先运用scanning的策略,让学生对两篇游记的细节有进一步的了解。
再通过深入思考环节,让学生在全面理解内容的基础上,对人物感受以及文章体裁和写作重点进行总结归纳这样的活动设计既充分锻炼学生分析问题、解决问题的能力。
