II. Background information 1. William Golding Two points are to be emphasized here: 1). Note that this text is an argumentation in style, but it s interwoven with many vivid descriptions, which make the essay not only eloquent and convincing, but also lifelike and humorous. This is the feature that makes this essay somewhat different from the other texts we ve covered in Book 2 and Book 3, th

Metonymy : the substitution of the name of one thing for that of another with which it is closely associated. More examples of Metonymy: 1). The world is watching closely what the White House will do next. (the White House stands for the American government) 2). Democracy favors the vote rather than the bullet. It shows that the author not only considers those people incompetent, dishonest and incoherent, but also despises most businessmen, distrusts most politicians and dislikes most publications. For more ironic sentences, see Ex. 6 on page 22, and itll be checked next period. Para24: The authors power of reasoning is getting stronger in Para. 24 and here, he
37、stood firm against the grade- three thinkers by way of exercising his humorous mockery. Conclusion: Grade- three thinkers are not to be called thinkers, to be strict. Because they just feel things, and they judge things according to their own preferences and prejudices. A large proportion of the popularity are contradictory in their words and deeds. 40、 crowd or jump on the bandwagon (=to opportunistically join the majority). 4. all warming their hands at the fire of their own prejudices: all feeling very content and happy because they share the same prejudices 5. men enjoy agreement : the author thinks that it is probably human nature to enjoy agreement because it seems to bring peace, security, comfort, and harmony. Para25: Para. 25 clarifies the characters of grade- two thinkers: 1). They often go to the other extreme (the other fault), nam
41、ely they are not as compulsive and heady as the grade- three thinkers but they act too slowly and lag behind. 2). They are cool enough to make their own judgment (withdrawal), but have no power to create. Note that this paragraph is a good combination of points and illustration. A case in point of the grade- two thinkers is that they find it meaningless to cheer the kings, but they dont know what to do to replace that heady patriotism. 1. to stampede : to get easily frightened and run with the c
42、rowd 2. to fall into the other fault: to go to the other extreme, that is, to act too slowly and lag behind 3. withdrawal: detachment from some emotional involvement; refusing to be part of the crowd 4. paraphrase It set me watching the there were compensations. It made me watch people shouting in joy and support of the King and wonder what this senseless excitement was all about although I did not have anything good to replace exciting or intoxicating patriotism. But I had my reward (I did get
