Thirty-five foreign ministers from the “group of 77” developing nations will be present and other member-countries are expected to be represented by high-level non-ministerial delegations at the two-day meeting. Over the past week, working commissions of the group have analysed common objectives on raw materials, energy, trade, development, finance, exchange of technology, and industrialization. The Group of 77 was set up as an informal grouping within the United Nations in 1964. It works closely with the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to promote trade. The number of member-countries has since grown. The commissions, whose members include countries in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), agreed on a meeting of stateowned energy companies in Vienna next year. The Group of 77 favours setting up its own multinational energy companies.
