Commentary lInthisgrotesquestory,OConnordevelopsseveral themes.WeseethatHulgahasneverreallygrown up.Shesactinglikearebelliousteenager,stomping aroundthehouse,slammingdoors,accusingher motherofbeingstupid,wearingagrungyoldskirt andasweatshirtwithacowboyonit.Weseealso herprideinherownintellectandinhermasteryof existentialism,whichcomescrashingdownwhen sheissogullibleandnaiveastobeeasily manipulatedbytheyoungBiblesalesman. Commentary lHulgamayactuallybeonsomekindofspiritual search,inspiteofherdenialthatGodexists.Sheis fooledbyManly,whomakesherthinkheisasimple religiouscountrybumpkinwaybeneathher.But ManlyismuchmoreworldlywisethanHulga;he seducesher,insteadoftheotherwayaround.And sheisleftsittingaloneinahayloftwithouther glasses(shewasnotseeingveryclearlyanyway) andwithoutherwoodenleg.Partofthebrilliant writinginthisstoryshowshowpeopletendtouse clichsinwaysthatmakeiteasyforthemtoavoid thinkingorseeingclearly.
