来自不同背景的人们在日常生活、学习和商业事务中的交流也变得不可避免本文以爱德华·霍尔的单向记时制和多向记时制的理论为研究基础,从文化、历史、宗教等多个角度分析^p 比较中美双方记时制度的差异和产生因素 时间观是人类在社会生活和劳动实践中逐渐形成的,中美作为东西方文化的典型代表,在记时制度上有着鲜明的特点,极具可比性人们的思维和行动深受其不同的文化影响,而生活方式的不同,导致了对时间安排和分配的灵活性差异,从而形成单、多向的时间观和记时制度 在跨文化交际活动中,时间观作为非语言交际不可或缺的重要部分,对记时制度差异的研究有助于加深我们对文化差异的理解,从而更有效的进行国际交往 【关键词】:^p :跨文化交际;时间观;记时制度 n An Analysis on the Differences of Time Systems between China and the United States from the Perspectives of Intercultural munication Abstract In recent years, China has accelerated the pace of the opening-up and strengthened ties with the world. munication between people from different backgrounds is also inevitable in daily life, study and business affairs. Based on Hall Edward’s monochronic and polychronic time theory, this paper analyzes and pares the differences and causes of the time systems between China and the United States from the perspectives of culture, history and religion. The time perspectives are gradually formed in the practice of social life and labor. As a typical representative of Eastern and Western cultures, China and America have distinct characteristics in the time systems, which are very parable. People’s thinking and actions are influenced by their very different cultures, and different lifestyles, which will lead to the flexibility disparity of time arrangement and distribution, thus forming mono-chronic and poly-chronic time perspectives and timing systems. In cross-cultural munication activities, time concept is an indispensable part of non-verbal munication. The study on the differences of time systems is helpful to deepen our understanding of cultural differences, so as to carry out international munication more effectively. Introduction As typical representatives of two difference types of cultures, China and America have distinct and parable characteristics in terms of time systems. Further understanding the different views of time between China and America, can aid us to make effective intercultural munication so as to achieve our goals. 1.1 Overview of This Thesis After China’s joined the WTO, opening-up system has bee more and more mature, and cross-border, cross-ethnic, cross-cultural exchanges are also increased more frequently. People from diverse backgrounds mutual learning from various aspects. Time is a non-verbal culture that can convey a lot of information in cross-cultural munication. The time orientation derived from anthropology, sociology and other disciplines refers to the time regional trend in which people emphasize or choose their views, behaviors, attitudes and so on (许谦, 20XX(11): 126). As an important aspect of the non-verbal cross-cultural munication, the study of time perspectives can help us to understand the cultural differences and carry out effective international exchange. In all ages, time plays a significant role in human activities, but the people’s attitudes vary towards time in different cultures. With the increasing exchanges between China and America, there are more chances to municate with Americans. So we need to understand the different time concept between China and the United States to make sure that the cross-cultural munication between China and the USA not fail due to the differences in the time concept. This thesis adopts the method of parison and analysis to study the differences on the basis of time perspectives between China and America, and uses Edward’s theory to build up the theoretical frameworks: monochronic and polychronic time systems theories. The author analyzes and pares the differences of the time systems of two counties, aiming to improve people’s munication skills and eliminate the misunderstanding and conflict in the cross-cultural activities. 1.2 Meaning of the Research The concept of time belongs to the deep structure of culture. China and the United States have different traditions and culture backgrounds, therefore people from different cultural and traditional backgrounds have different concepts of time. With the increasing frequency of cross-cultural munication in today’s world, the parison of time systems between China and America is a meaningful study. Levine Robert once said in his book Geography of Time: “Time is the way nature uses to prevent things from happening at the same time” (Robert, 1998: 68).
