However, the quality of audio-visual translation still needs to be improved, so it is very significant to make a study to the theory of English audio-visual translation. This thesis will present the Nida’s functional equivalence theory used in the film translation to analyze that it is necessary and practical to apply this theory in the subtitles translation. And this thesis will analyze from three aspects, the free translation strategy, the focus on figures’ voice tone, characteristic translation corresponded with the character construction of different figures, to witness the necessity and feasibility of functional equivalence theory conducted in the subtitles translation of Downton Abbey. Therefore, the majority of people have no access to foreign programs without the translation because subtitles play a very important role in programs. Thus subtitle translation attracts more and more attention and becomes indispensable under this circumstance.In order to have a better understanding for the foreign culture, it is necessary to pay more attention on the subtitle translation because film and TV series involve too many culture factors in it.
