5页语言风格的翻译对策问题(2) 译文: Mr. Huang was old. People addressed him as “Respected Mr. Huang”. Being old, he easily got tired and could not help it. After supper, having watched some news on the TV, he began to feel sleepy, so he went about washing his face and feet before going to bed. Suddenly the doorbell rang, announcing the arrival of a visitor. As Mr. Huang had never refused any visitor before, this one should be received with courtesy too. Quickly putting his socks back on and smoothing his hair, he hurried to the door, and there he was encountered by a man with a fat glowing face. By the first word he uttered Mr. Huang was sure this man was from a far-off place. He took out a calling card from his pocket and said: “I’m a reporter on the Literature and Arts Gazette of S city, and I’m here to see you on Mr. X’s recommendation. I’ve come to attend a symposium in Beijing and in the meantime I’m visiting some celebrities here. I’ve had the honor of visiting with Respected Mr. Z and Mr. J” “I’m not much of a celebrity, though. How can I be lined up with people like Respected Mr. Z and Mr. J. However, since you’ve come, come on in and take a seat. Whatever you want to talk about, please go ahead.” “What’s your name?” Mr. Huang was shocked. How come he was here visiting me as a “celebrity” and didn’t even know my name? (刘士聪 译) 这是著名作家、翻译家楼适夷的一篇小小说,语言轻松自然、诙谐幽默,人物描写得活灵活现、生动逼真。
文艺报记者浅薄庸俗;黄老胸怀坦荡,淡薄名利在这种话语情景下,口语化的语言显得恰如其分,字里行间回荡着嘲讽之意,令人忍俊不禁语言的内容和风格协调统一,很好地表达了作品的思想内容原作的作者善于巧用字词,比如开篇第一句“老黄老了,人称‘黄老’”译者注意到了这一行文细节,同样巧用了英语中的“old”和“respected”,整句话译为“Mr. Huang was old. People addressed him as ‘Respected Mr. Huang’”,既达意又传神,吻合原作的用词风格在第二段中,寥寥数笔,就出现了三个“一”字,例如:“门铃一声响”,“一开口就知道是远客”,“他拿出一张名片”其中,“一张”表示实物数量,其余两个则表示动作行为的数量译者对前两个“一”字的处理也很是巧妙,如:“门铃一声响”被译为“Suddenly the door bell rang”;“一开口就知道是远客”译为“By the first word he uttered Mr. Huang was sure this man was from a far-off place”其中,用副词suddenly转换“一声响”中“一”的含义;用介词短语by the first word传达“一开口”的含义。
另外,译文处处注意到再现原作的嘲讽之意,如:“来客红光满面,一开口就知道是远客”译为“……and was encountered by a man with a fat glowing face. By the first word he uttered Mr. Huang was sure this man was from a far-off place”红光满面”本来是个褒义词,但在整个作品的话语情景下,其隐含之意并不好,已为“文艺报记者”的庸俗无礼埋下了伏笔因此,把“红光满面”译为“with a fat glowing face”,很好地再现了原文作者的讽刺意图可以看出,整个译文是忠实于原作语言风格的,保持了原作的语气和口语化语言特点,传达出了原作中幽默诙谐的气息刘士聪教授的译文很好地再现了原作的思想内容和语言风格 例文(二): 我同书籍,即将分离我虽非英雄,颇有垓下之感,即无可奈何 (摘自孙犁:《书籍》)译文: Soon I’ll part with my books; I’ll have to, the way the ancient hero Xiang Yu parted with his favorite lady Yu Ji at Gaixia. 以上这段文字摘自孙犁的作品《书籍》。
例文字数不多,却很典型正如刘士聪和高巍所写:“作家孙犁,秉性刚正;对国家、对民族满怀忧患之心他与书同生活,公命运笔者在前文也提到法国博物学家兼文学家布封的“风格即人格”的观点,在这里就得到了很好的印证孙犁的人格魅力自然地流露于作品的字里行间,读来亲切感人;语言文字虽平淡朴素,却蕴义深刻要很好地传达作家的思想气度和作品的蕴涵之义,须认真仔细地研读原作的语言文字,尽可能多地了解作家的性格品质这里,着重探讨一下文中“垓下之感”的译法和这段文字的语音节奏的传译文革期间,书籍遭劫,孙犁想到即将与书分离,“颇有垓下之感”垓下之感”来自汉语的文化典故《霸王别姬》,多数读者对此约略知道一些 而且,原文的语音节奏短促而又紧凑因此,考虑到原文的行文节奏,不宜对此典故加以详细注释翻译时只需根据英语语言的表达习惯,将原句略作变通,译出原句的主要意思,即“我同书籍,即将分离……无可奈何”,而对“垓下之感”只需用平淡朴素的英语语言高度概括其内容精髓在这里,刘士聪教授将原文的两句转换成译文中的一句 值得我们惊叹的是:原文与译文在形式上是相似的,在节奏上是吻合的 译文在忠实于原文语言内容的基础上,也很好地传达了原文的语言风格。
