Well, our little heroine is now at the age of fantasy, so she is much eager to see extraordinary world. Listen! DOROTHY(enters from the left side of the stage, sings) Somewhere, over the rainbow, way up high, There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby. Somewhere, over the rainbow, skies are blue, And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true Someday I'll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds are far behind me. Where troubles melt like lemon drops, Away above the chimney tops, That's where you'll find me. Somewhere, over the rainbow, bluebirds fly. Birds fly over the rainbow, Why then -- oh, why can't I? If happy little bluebirds fly Beyond the rainbow Why, oh, why can't I?(exit from the right side) Aside: Oh what a poor girl! Maybe I could help her. Let me see, just a little magic. [all lights off. Play the sound of storming and winding.][we can hear Dorothy says,” what’s happening? Oh, the house is flying! Oh, my! I guess I’m up inside a cyclone. Help! Help!][all sounds disappears] Aside: And now, our young lady, actually, her house lands on a fresh new world, full of adventures and miracles, called OZ. The first strange thing our sweet heart have learned is that her house have landed on the wicked witch of the east and she happened to free all the people who suffered a lot from the witch. So they hold spectacular pageant to thank her. [play the music of festival]. But unfortunately, the dead witch has a sister, who is much more wicked. She wants to get the powerful pair of red slippers of the dead witch. And the slippers now are on Dorothy’s feet.[the witch says, I’ll get you. I’ll get the slippers. Just wait, my sweetie, just when you are on my way. Ahhhhh] when the wicked witch has gone, another witch who is good and kind told Dorothy to go to the Emerald City and get the Wizard of Oz to help her go home. So the journey starts!(exit) [lights on] DOROTHY(enters from the right side of the stage):Follow the Yellow Brick Road? Follow the Yellow....?(puzzled when facing two roads)Now which way shall I go? SCARECROW (right arm points to right) That way is a very nice way. DOROTHY (whirls about and looks at him, a bit frightened as she looks about him): Who said that? ( whirls and turns her back to the SACRECROW) SCARECROW (points to left with his other arm): It's pleasant down that way, too. DOROTHY (quickly turns back): That's funny. Wasn't he pointing the other way? SCARECROW (crosses his arms and points in both directions): Of course, people do go both ways! DOROTHY: Why.... (steps forward to the SCARECROW) you did say something, didn't you? [The Scarecrow shakes his head, then nods ] DOROTHY: Are you doing that on purpose, or can't you make up your mind? SCARECROW (shows his straw head) That's the trouble. I can't make up my mind. I haven't got a brain -- only straw. DOROTHY( she steps up to the Scarecrow): Well, we haven't really met properly, have we? SCARECROW: Why, no. DOROTHY (curtsies): How do you do? SCARECROW (nods): How do you do? DOROTHY: Very well, thank you. SCARECROW: Oh, I'm not feeling at all well. You see, it's very tedious being stuck up here all day long with a pole up your back. DOROTHY: Oh, dear -- that must be terribly uncomfortable. Can't you get down? (moves to Scarecrow’s back) SCARECROW: Down? No, you see, I'm -- Well, -- I'm -- DOROTHY: Oh, well, here -- let me help you. SCARECROW: Oh, that's very kind of you -- very kind. [Dorothy looses the string and the Scarecrow falls to the ground] SCARECROW: Ohhhh -- DOROTHY:Ohh! [some straws goes out of the Scarecrow and he puts them back] SCARECROW:Whhhooops! Ha-ha -- there goes some of me again! DOROTHY: Oh -- does it hurt you? SCARECROW: Oh, no -- I just keep picking it up and putting it back in again. SCARECROW(very excited): My, it's good to be free! [the Scarecrow falls down again and Dorothy runs to help him] DOROTHY:Oh! Oh! Ohhh! SCARECROW: Did I scare you? DOROTHY: No, No -- I -- I just thought you hurt yourself. SCARECROW: But I didn't scare you? DOROTHY: No -- of course not. SCARECROW (sad): I didn't think so. You see, I can't even scare a crow! They come from miles around just to eat in my field and laugh in my face! Oh, I'm a failure, because I haven't got a brain. DOROTHY: Well, what would you do with a brain if you had one? SCARECROW: Do? Why, if I had a brain, I could -- (sings) I could while away the hours, Conferrin' with the flowers, Consultin' with the rain. And my head I'd be scratchin' While my thoughts were busy hatchin' If I only had a brain. I'd unravel every riddle For any individ'le In trouble or in pain. 。
