    • This essay mainly discusses the purpose of education. The college education at its best should move the student from competence to commitment.I. The main idea of Part 1 (PP1-2): Where should today's university students put their faith in this uncertain age?1. competence n. = being able to do sth well, ability 能力 / have competence for /as /in sth || have competence in doing sth || competence to do sth ability,capacity,capability,genius,talent,competence,faculty,gift,aptitude  这些名词均可表示人的“能力,才能”之意ability → 普通用词,指人先天的或学来的各种能力。

      capacity → 侧重指人的潜在能力,通常不指体力,多指才智,尤指接受与领悟能力capability → 多用于人,指胜任某项具体工作的能力,也指本身具有、尚未发挥的潜在能力常与of或for连用genius → 语气最强,指天赋的高度才能与智力talent → 着重指人某方面具有可发展和倍养的突出天赋才能,但语意比genius弱competence → 正式用词,侧重指令人满意的业务能力与水平,达到胜任某项工作等的要求faculty → 指特殊的才能或智力gift → 着重个人的天赋的才能或在某方面的显著本领,常暗含不能用一般规律作解释的意味aptitude → 多指先天或后天习得的运用自如的能力,常暗示接受能力强,能迅速掌握一种学术训练或艺术技巧e.g.: And their language and linguistic competence should be improved. No one doubts her competence as a teacher. No one doubts her competence in solving the problem. competent adj. competent as /at / in sth || competent to do sth e.g. She is not competent to look after young children / He is a highly competent driver. 2. Commit  委托;委任(com共同+mit→共同送→委任)[Miss,mit=send,cast,表示"送,放出"]v.把...交托给,提交;犯(错误),干(坏事)The committee admits it committed an omission in commissioning the mission.Commitment (to sth or to do sth ) n. the hard work and loyalty that sb. gives to an organization activity .承诺,保证;信奉,献身;承担的义务commitment to sth || commitment to do sth 1 willingness to give time/energy to sth ~his lifelong commitment to the socialist cause 2 a responsibility ♦♦ com|mit|ment (commitments)1 [N-UNCOUNT] oft N to nCommitment is a strong belief in an idea or mitment to the ideals of Bolshevism.(Bolshevik布尔什维克)2 [N-COUNT]A commitment is something which regularly takes up some of your time because of an agreement you have made or because of responsibilities that you have.3 [N-COUNT] usu N to-inf, N to nIf you make a commitment to do something, you promise that you will do it. (FORMAL)We made a commitment to keep working together...They made a commitment to peace. e.g. : I felt I did not have to make such a commitment to them. My aunt has a sincere commitment to Buddhism. The Chinese government does stand for the peaceful settlement of the Taiwan Question, but makes no commitment for not using force because such a commitment wouldn't help the peaceful settlement. "He has taken on too many commitments. We made a commitment to pay our bills on time.3. Ernest Boyer: a former Commissioner of Education in USA. In the article, Ernest Boyer discusses a lot of problems about higher education in the US and he also tells us how to solve these problems Ernest Boyer is sure that undergraduate education can make a difference in the intellectual and personal lives of its students. 4.ambiguous adj. = 意义含糊的, 有歧义的, e.g.: He kept making ambiguous remarks instead of straightforward yes-or-no replies. || ambiguousness n. / ambiguity n. vague,dim,indefinite,obscure,ambiguous,faint  这些形容词均含“不明确的,模糊的”之意。

      vague → 多指因语言不确切,太笼统或因构思含糊、不完善而造成模糊难解dim → 侧重指或因光线暗淡,或因年代久远、身体欠佳等因素而产生视觉或察觉方面的困难indefinite → 指无明确定义或限定,重点或总体轮廓不明确obscure → 语气最强,指晦涩难懂ambiguous → 指文章或讲话中,意思可能有多种理解,令人捉摸不定faint → 指对某事物印象不深,或指声音微弱或希望的渺茫等5. devote oneself/ sth to:= 为某人、某事(付出时间、精力等)e.g.: devote ourselves to our study. Here "to" is a preposition. Pay attention to the following prepositional "to": acceptable to / according to / accustomed to / adequate to / adjust to / admit to / approach to / attach to / pay attention to / attribute to / belong to / close to / contrary to contribute to / devote to / due to / equal to / exception to / inferior to / look forward to / married to / necessary to / next to / opposed to / preferable to / prior to / refer to / related to / relevant to / solution to / stick to / subject to || Pay attention to the phrase "be devoted to sth/ sb", in which "devoted" is an adjective meaning loving or loyal. e.g.: The noblest ideal to which one can devote oneself is Communism. He started to study ecology and decided to devote his whole life to the science. Please devote more time to your work. 6. establish themselves (in sth /as sth)= place sb/oneself in a position, office, etc, usu. on a permanent basis. 使某人任职,使某人成为,安顿 E.g.: We are now comfortably established in our new house. * He established himself as governor of the province. * She's now firmly established (in business) as an art dealer. The manager established (安排) his relatives in the best jobs.If you establish yourself, your reputation, or a good quality that you have, you succeed in doing something, and achieve respect or a secure position as a result of this.7. admitted to ("to" is a preposition): conf。
