Basic knowledge ensures competence in theory and practical applications.2334Introduction Multiple restraint system 5Development of multiple restraint systemsThe Multiple Restraint System MRS 5 is a consistent further-development of the MRS systems in BMW vehicles. This development began in 1996 with the MRS 1 in the E38/E39. The MRS 2 was implementedwiththeintroductionofthehead airbag in the E38 in 1998. MRS 1 and MRS 2 had only one diagnosis bus connection. With the introduction of the MRS 3 in 1999, the safety system was integrated in the K-bus network. MRS 4 was introduced in 2001.The MRS4 RD for the E83 is the last system with K-bus connection. The MRS 5 was used for the first time in 2004 on the BMW 1 Series. The new vehicle circuit structures with K-CAN connection were implemented with the introduction of the BMW 1 Series. The sensor concept of the MRS4 RD is adopted for the MRS 5.MRS 5 control unitThe task of the MRS 5 control unit is to detect accident situations critical for the vehicle occupants and to activate the necessary restraintsystemsselectivelycorrespondingto the crash severity. With the introduction of the new wiring harness concept, the control unit has been expanded from one to two connectors. The firstconnectorlinksthecockpitwiringharness while the second connector is for the vehicle wiring harness. The MRS 5 control unit performs internal diagnosis and monitors all inputs and outputs. Any faults that may occur are stored non- volatile in the control unit and indicated to thedriver by way of the airbag warning lamp (AWL) in the instrument cluster.Communication with other control units in the vehicle system network takes place via the K- CAN. In the event of a crash, a K-bus protocol is transmitted (provided SA 638/639 telephone is installed) via a separate data line to the telema。
