    • Not just pretty faces本文作者:21ST期号:433阅读数:972评论打印收藏TFboys (L to R): Wang Yuan, Wang Junkai and Yiyang Qianxi. TF ENTERTAINMENTTFboys为什么这么红?词数 340建议阅读时间 8分钟OVERNIGHT, TFboys, a boy band consisting of three middle school students, became the talk all over China. Founded last year, the oldest member of TFboys is only 14. But the number of their followers on Sina Weibo has reached 11 million. Their music videos are also getting millions of views online. Some say that TFboys has become popular only because of their pretty faces. But take a serious look at the three boys, and you may find out what has helped them win over so many people.Wang Junkai, 14, from ChongqingWhat did you do when you were 8 years old? Wang had become a trainee (练习生) at TF Entertainment at that age. He still goes to school like other kids during weekdays. But his weekends were filled with training classes. He learned how to sing and dance. He had to do the splits (劈叉) again and again. Many boys couldn’t stand it and quit, but Wang didn’t give up. Before he finally became a TFboy, the tough guy has been practicing for five years.Wang Yuan, 13, from ChongqingFans like to call Wang “Er Yuan” because he is a funny guy who’s always telling dry jokes. But when he starts to sing, you’d be thrilled by his clear voice and high pitch (高音). The cheerful boy lives a simple life. He doesn’t like to compare himself with others. His mobile phone cost only 300 yuan. He is a big fan of Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf. He has watched every Pleasant Goat movie at the cinema.Yiyang Qianxi, 13, from HunanYiyang is the shortest of the three boys, but he definitely has the most splendid resume (履历). He is a top student. He is an excellent dancer. He takes part in TV shows. He has played different roles in many movies. He is even good at calligraphy (书法). When other teenagers show off their new clothes on Weibo, Yiyang displays his calligraphy work. How can he be good at so many things? “I’d practice dancing while others were chatting,” he said.Cool summer stories本文作者:Zhou Yixuan期号:433阅读数:295评论打印收藏Guo Ruiting, 14 , gives a painting lesson to kids. WHAT did you do during the summer holiday? Relax or watch TV? Sounds a bit boring. Some kids have done really cool things this summer. Let’s hear their stories.Li Yang, 14, from Beijing Shangdi Experimental School worked hard to spread kite culture. On July 26, she joined a culture study group in Weifang, Shandong. After learning the history of kites there, she was interested in the art. To find out what other people thought of kite art, the group did a street survey. To their surprise, the result was not good. So, they decided to do something to promote (改善) it.They offered many suggestions to museum workers and famous kite makers, such as holding more kite festivals, and offering kite-making classes in schools. They also planned to organize (组织) other groups to come and learn about kite culture.“Natives were happy that we care so much about kites,” said Li. “It really feels good to make contributions (贡献) to this culture.”What about others? Guo Ruiting, 14, spent two days with 15 kids from families of migrant workers (农民工). She volunteered as a painting teacher in the city village this summer.Attending Shenzhen Foreign Language School, Guo had a fine life like many children there. Sometimes, she felt tired and complained. But her volunteer experience changed her mind.In the village class, students sat still and listened to her carefully. And they treasured the colorful pencils that Guo brought for them.“I taught them to paint but they taught me more,” said Guo. “I appreciate that my parents give me such a happy life. I’ve seldom complained now.”By Zhou Yixuan,21st Century Teens staffUS teens build sustainable house本文作者:21ST-MCT期号:433阅读数:182评论打印收藏Students from Key School build the house with lumber. MCT看美国中学生巧夺天工,建可持续利用环保小木屋。

ONE morning during summer, about 50 US middle school students in yellow hard hats came to a school parking lot. Some carried lumber (木材), others worked together on the railing (栏杆). They were trying to build a tiny house.Early this year, students at Key School, Maryland, US, watched the documentary Tiny: A Story About Living Small. It talks about a couple’s experience building their own small but sustainable (可持续的) house. The class was inspired and decided to build one themselves. It was small – only 210 square feet (20 square meters) – but still not easy for the teens. Complete with solar panels (太阳能电池板) and a rainwater filtration (过滤) system, the compact home was designed to have the smallest possible size. Students worked in teams to finish the house on a tight schedule.“I got to put in a window, and that was a big job,” said Julia Branscombe, a student at Key School. She had to climb up the 。
