However, the current HTML-based Web is mainly designed for humans to browse and use. When weaving Web pages, developers annotated little semantic information with them. This is mainly caused by HTML that is almost no features to add “semantics” or “meaning” into information of the Web pages, which results in that the HTML-based Web is lack of semantic structure that can be exploited during the process of information processing. Thus, most of functions of information processing on the Web, such as filtering, correlation, fusion and integration of information, cannot be really achieved. Especially, it is difficult for agents to freely combine HTML-based information and services. In order to solve this problem but have to avoid requirements pursued in early Artificial Intelligence (AI) of which the machines must entirely understand natural language, it is necessary to pioneer a fire-new approach and design a fire-new mechanism for expressing information that is machine-readable and machine-understandable. Under the background, Tim Berners-lee, one of inventors of WWW, proposed the concept of the Semantic Web formally on the conference of XML2000. On the Semantic Web, a new type of documents including semantic information will be used weave a machine-readable and machine-understandable semantic information infrastructure for supporting new functions such as information interoperability, information fusion, and information integration. One of the most important objectives is to implement semantic information interoperability. The definition and the layer architecture of the Semantic Web indicate that ontology will play a crucial role in solving problem of information interoperability in the open and distributed environment. The use of a shared ontology will allow a certain degree of interoperability. However, users locating at different sites might have different views for conceptualizing same information, and they will develop and maintain their own ontology independently each other. Even if all models are described in a common ontology language, there still exist different conceptualizations for same information. This leads to a new problem - semantic interoperability, which were also referred as ontology mismatch in some literatures. In order to solving ontology mismatch, it is necessary to introduce ontology mapping so that semantic interoperability may be implemented by concept-switching or concept-transforming function. However, even if ontology and ontology mapping define all formal semantic information and mapping information, it is still possible to cause semantic differences in using this formal information because of different users (agents) with different background knowledge. To avoid this problem practically, only depending upon ontology cannot be a thorough solution. It also needs to accumulate the best practices of scenarios, in other words, accumulate the best patterns of how to combine semantic information and services on the Semantic Web by scenario-based agents. Obviously, to guarantee information interoperability, ontology driven approach and scenario driven approach should be integrated complementally. Ontology mapping on the Semantic Web is the topic of this thesis, and this thesis mainly focuses on designing a formal ontology mapping representation language, developing discover technique for ontology mapping, as well as designing information interoperability architecture for mapping execution. Concretely, the thesis includes: Firstly, by studying the characteristics of ontology languages on the Semantic Web, we discuss their theoretical foundation, and mainly investigate Expressive Description Logics (DLs) as a mapping knowledge expression language as well as its axioms’ similarity with ontology mapping. And then we proposed a view-based logical framework for ontology mapping, and give the well-defined formal semantics of ontology mapping as well as related reasoning services. On the basis of analyzing several dimensions of a Semantic ix Articulation (SA) to describe ontology mappings, we propose a layered mapping meta-ontology for describing mapping relations between elements of different ontology according to ontology mapping’s three subtasks: mapping representation, mapping discover, and mapping execution. Based on the proposed mapping meta-ontology, we present ontology mapping markup language SAML (Semantic Articulation Markup Language) that is compatible with the future Semantic Web. Thus, users can annotate ontology mapping information into semantic information sources during establishing them. When designing formal ontology mapping language SAML, we consider its desiderata: well-defined semantics, powerful。
