If Shug has taught Celie to rebirth and to be a rebel's angel, then Nettie is the beautiful hope which exists in Celie’s life forever. In these many years the only hope of Celie is to obtain younger sister's letter. The reason why she has made great efforts to study how to read is that when she receives the letters, she could understand younger sister's echo.Nettie has the same background with Celie, but when being made insistent demand of her stepfather, instead of being obedient, she runs away. Getting rid of her stepfather, she lives with Celie, she tries to help Celie to study and fight back the abuse. Although the time was not long, she actually lets Celie have the way of blowing off repressed emotion—“Write”( Walker, 1983: 10 ). After resisting Albert’s rape, she bravely chooses to flee, and finally reaches Africa, doing helps to people there.Nettie keeps her word—“Nothing but death can keep me from it”( Walker, 1983:10 ). She has been writing letters to Celie, narrating what she sees and hears. When these letters finally are read by Celie, these letters help Celie’s revolt against Mister, playing an determining role in Celie’s rebellion and leaving for Memphis. Nettie is a new outstanding black feminine representative, she is optimistic, self-confident, and believes that knowledge can change the black female's low social position. It is she that has been summoning Celie in the distant place. It is she that always protects Celie silently. So we can say that she is the torchbearer to Celie!The second model is Sofia—Celie’s daughter-in-law. This obese crude woman actually has completely different characters with Celie. Sofia’s behavior is brand-new to Celie. She has opened a leaf of new window to Celie, providing the fresh air for her. Being pregnant, she rushes to the front of Albert suddenly with long hurried strides to compel the marriage to Harpo. Albert is surprised and discontented, regarding her as such an arrogant haugty daughter-in-law, but Sofia is actually the woman who does not care about what other thinks. She manages the family property, dominates above the man, and all this makes herself be such one that lets Celie feels great confusion. If we say that Shug is attaches to and is using the man, then Sofia substitutes for man's status completely.However, Sophia is the representative black woman who receives discriminates against and persecutes most in The Color Purple. Sophia is vital, and dares to fight at first. She is big, vigorous, healthy, her physical strength is excellent, and she has learned the self-defense ability since childhood ,facing the masculine humiliation. She says “All my life I had to fight. I had to fight my daddy. I had to fight my brothers. I had to fight my cousins and my uncles. A girl child ain't safe in a family of men ”( walker, 1983: 22 ). She is a good wife, good mother. Her upright disposition and the dauntless rebellious spirit let Celie envys and admires. One day, the wife of the mayor finds Sophia is astutely competent, therefore she wants Sophia to go to her family to be the maid. Unwillingly being insulted, she makes impertinent remarks, and draws a slap on the face. After rising in self-defense, she receives a group of police's beating mercilessly. Imprisoned for six months, she gets the disability, and almost loses her life.Imposing violet behavior on the female is not only the family tradition, but also the social tradition. Sophia has defeated the domestic abuse. She once says, “I loves Harpo, she say. God knows I do. But I'll kill him dead before I let him beat me”( Walker, 1983: 22 ). However, for the racial discrimination actually just like a mountain to press her not to gasp for breath, she can not but suffer the Caucasian male and feminine oppression. Just as feminists deeply realize the profound meaning—while the feminine consciousness awakens in black women, they must connect it with the entire race destiny together closely. Only when the entire race obtains the thorough liberation, can they truely get rid of the sex discrimination. But Sofia’s behavior indeed encourages Celie. It is her brave warrior's struggle that directly inspires Celie to revolte against mister’s abuse.The sisters’ friendships have given Celie the tremendous strength, particularly the friendly concern from Shug who is the most important model to Celie. Shug, a woman, who is just like her name, is charming, beautiful, makes the innumerable men to be crazy, also including the unreasoning passioned Albert. To Celie, Albert is crude ominous barbarian, but in front of Shug, he actually looks like the cat incomparably to be generally docile, and he spares no effort to flatter this woman, goes to the kitchen personally to prepare food for Shug without hesitate. But on the other hand, Shug looks like the wind to him, sometimes comes sometimes goes, she is。
