20页Electronic EnglishIntroductionDefinitionNamesStylistic featuresLexicallySyntacticallyDefinitionElectronic English is a general term,and it is used here to refer to the computer-mediated English.NamesElectronic English can also be labeled by other names though slight differences exist,such as netspeak,cyberlanguage,cyberspeak,e-speak,CMC language,netlish,weblish,Internet language,electronic discourse,or English used in blog, chat room,e-mail,or web forum,etc.Stylistic featuresE-English is interactive,electronic,communicative in nature,with the text presented on the screen.The common stylistic features of E-English are as follows.LexicallyE-English is mainly characterized by the economy of language,which are reflected in the use of abbreviations,clippings,blendings,numbers,emotions,smileys,ect.AbbreviationsAbbreviations have always been an integral part of computer culture and now,they are popular on the Internet.Some Abbreviations used in Netspeak Conversations.E.g.:afaik=as fae as I knowasap=as soon as possibleatw =at the weekendbbl =be back laterbcnu=be seeing youcu =see youcul =see you latercya=see you ClippingsClippings are used quite flexibly in E-Discourse.They are brief,short,eye-catching,and economical.They are formed through front clipping,middle clipping,back clipping,and complex clipping.E.g.:Net=the Internet x =kissop =operatorsite=websitebb =babeppl=people BlendingsBlendings are words joined by the initial part of a word and the initial or final part of another word.Blending are most often used in writing related to science and technology as well as in news reports and advertisements.They are considered as informal,even slangy.E.g.:weblish=web+EnglishNetlish=Net+Englishemoticon=emoticon+iconnetiquette=net+etiquetteNumbers Numbers are used to substitute similar-sounding syllables in some words and thus shorten the typing time.E.g.:88=bye-bye2=two/too4=four/forB4=beforeSmileyA similey is a sequence of characters on the computer keyboard,used in all keyboard writings including the cell-phone short messages.They are often used before or after a message or after punctuation marks instead of words or punctuation marks.EmoticonAn emoticon is a typical sign which is often used to show feelings in e-mail,chatroom,blog,post,or other E-Discourses,especially for some casual topics.SyntacticallyE-English tends to be simple and direct,which is reflected in its tendency of using short sentences,simple sentences,minor sentences,elliptical sentences,active voice,present and present continuous tenses,etc.Short sentence:Many of them contain 2-10 words.The sentence structure tends to be simple.Simple sentence:It contains only a single independent clause.It can be very effective in catching the readers attention or summing up an argument,which is important in e-communication.Elliptical sentences are characteristic of informal speeches or personal letters.Active voice renders the language more simple and direct in e-communication,while passive voice often suppresses or de-emphasizes some elements.Therefore active voice is highly used in E-English.。
