We don’t believe that the news is true. • 我们相信这个消息不是真的。

The mountain is not valuable because it is high． • 山不在高III. 全部否定与部分否定• 否定词not与表示整体意义的词，如all, both, everything, everywhere, always, often, entirely, necessarily等连用时，不管位置如 何，都表部分否定，译为“并非都…” • 1. All is not gold that glitters． • ＝Not all is gold that glitters. • 闪光的不一定都是金子 • 2. Everything on the Internet is not reliable. • 网络上的东西并非都是可信的。

• 3. Both of them are not useful. • ＝Not both of them are useful．• 他们两人不都是有用的 • 4. Such a thing is not found everywhere．• 这样的东西并不是到处都可找到 • 5. The rich are not always happy. • 富人也不总是快乐的 • 6. His attention was not entirely paid to his research.• 他的注意力没有完全放在他的研究 上★全部否定 由“否定主语（否定代词或 no+名词）+ 肯定谓语”构成• 1. Nothing is difficult if you put your heart into it. • 世上无难事，只怕有心人 • 2. None of us can speak French. • 我们都不会讲法语 • 3. No man is born wise. • 人非生而知之 • 英语中表示全部否定时，常借助于no，none， nobody，nothing，neither，never，nowhere 等否定词。

IV. 否定的形式表肯定的含义• 在学习英语过程中，有些句子看上去是否定句 ，但其真正的意义却是肯定的 • 1. 含有“否定词+until / till”的句子，通常译为 “直到……才”，“直到……再” • He did not come back until twelve . • 直到十二点钟他才回来 • 2. 含有“can not……too”的句子，通常译为 “无论怎么……也不算过分”，“越……越好 ” • We can not praise him too much . • 我们无论怎样称赞他也不为过• 3. 含有“no+形容词比较级/副词比较级 +than”的句子，通常是把句中的形容词或副 词译为与其相对应的反义意思 • Jack is no taller than Mike . • 杰克和迈克一样矮 • There are no more than ten new words in it . • 这篇课文里面仅有十个生词 • 4. 含有“no sooner……than”或“hardly / scarcely……when”的句子，通常译为“一 ……就……”，表示两个动作几乎同时发生。

• Hardly had I reached the bus stop when the bus started . • 我刚一到车站，车就开了• 5. 含有“否定词+but”的句子，否定词后 接but相当于“否定之否定”，即为肯定， 因此全句应按肯定意义来翻译 • There is no one but hopes to be successful . • 人人都想成功 • There is nothing but a joke . • 那只是开开玩笑而已 • Not a man but had tears in his eyes . • 人人都眼含泪水• 6. 含有“can not but + 动词原形，can not help + but动词原形或can’t help + 动词的现在分词 ”的句子，通常译为“不得不……”，“情不 自禁地”，“忍不住……” • I can not but make a promise to get him a dictionary . • 我只好答应给他买一本字典 • When a close friend died , you can’t help but feel sad . • 好朋友去世，你一定会感到伤心。

• Seeing the picture , he couldn’t help laughing . • 看到这张照片，他禁不住大笑起来• 7. 含有“否定词 + too……to或too + …… + 否定词+ to ”的句子，前者可理解为对 too……to句型的否定，即“否定的否定” ，全句则表示肯定的含义后者通常译为 “非常……必定能”或“太……不会不” • One is never too old to learn . • 活到老，学到老 • Tom is too honest not to tell the truth . • 汤姆非常诚实，一定会说实话的 • He is too careful not to think of you . • 他非常细心，不会想不到你的V. 否定句的倒装• 表否定意义的词或短语放在句首，要用部 分倒装如not, never, seldom, hardly, in no way, by no means, at no time等 • By no means will china first use nuclear weapons. • Not often do they meet. • Hardly had I got to the station when it began to rain.否定祈使句• 由“Don’t 或Never+ 动词原形”所构成。
