It is within the core scope of World’s Natural and Cultural Heritage. Oriental Capital of Buddhism covers more than 1,000 mu of forestland. 乐山大佛所在的凌云九峰，唐代时“峰各有寺”（《大象阁记》），后毁于元明。

东方佛都寻古人遗迹，以恢复唐代风貌为宗旨，始建于1989年，落成于1994年，荟萃了世间石刻佛像精品，为四川美院老教授们雕塑，中国雕塑大师刘开渠先生是参谋 According to Daxianggeji, there used to be “temples on each peak” of the Nine Peaks in the Tang Dynasty; however, most of the temples were destroyed during the Yuan and Ming. Oriental Capital of Buddhism is a reminiscence of the Tang styles. The project was initiated in 1989, and was completed in 1994. It features state-of-the-art stone statues of Buddha images across the world, sculpted by senior professors from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, with Mr. Liu Kaiqu, master of Chinese sculpture, as consultant. 东方佛都，大小佛像万余尊，其中包括世界最大睡佛170米，以摩崖石刻雕像为主。

依山取势，林隐千佛，洞中百窟，既表示了佛文化千年的神韵，又留下了现代人传承古人石刻雕塑艺术的踪迹 There are more than 10,000 statues of Buddhas, of various sizes, including the world’s largest inclining Buddha (170 meters). The majority of the statues were sculpted off of mountain cliffs. With thousands of Buddhas hidden in the woods, and hundreds of grottos situated in caves, Oriental Capital of Buddhism is a revelation of thousands of years of Buddhist culture, as well as a tribute to ancient stone sculptural art by contemporary artists. 东方佛都，森林笼罩，野趣横生，有原始自然的古朴。

填补了乐山大佛少石窟群的空白堪称中国第五大石窟群 The grottoes are a grand showcase of lifelike Buddha statues, which were sculpted off of mountain cliffs as in ancient traditions. It is a complement to the Grand Buddha of Leshan, and makes the fifth largest grottoes in China. 降妖池 Buddha against Mara 释迦牟尼成佛之前，受魔王阻拦，波旬派几个妖女前去勾引。

It is the only Buddha sculpture by Mr. Liu Kaiqu, father of contemporary Chinese sculpture who oversaw (appointed by Premier Zhou Enlai) the project of the Monument to People’s Heroes. Mr. Zhao Puchu commented the sculpture as “the ultimate solemnity of life”. 。
