It refers to circumstances in which a speaker uses two or more than two language varieties. This thesis regards Chinese-English code-switching as the research subject register which based on Mi lory and Huang GuowerTs classifications of code-switching and Jef.Verschuerens adaptation theory, aiming to explore the forms of code-switching in Chinese popular songs, analyze their common features and discuss the motivations in the lyrics. It proposed that the motivations which include rhyming, emotion expression in euphemism, social status consultation, conformation of the trend of globalization and so on. The purpose is to make songs to be spread and accepted more easily. Introduction Code-switching is one of the most common phenomena in the word. As a result of frequent language contact in todays world, it is common for people to use languages or language varieties in daily conversations, literary works, television programs, advertisements, popular songs and so on. Bloom & Gumperz divided code-switching into situational and metaphorical code-switching (Gumperz, 1982:31) and stated that inter-sentential has certain limit in the structure (Gumperz, 1982:31). Since then, linguists started to carry on research from sociolinguistics, pragmatics, syntax, psycholinguistics and so on. Bloom & Gumperz, Myers-Scotton, Poplack, Yang Zhiqing Pfaff etc. are the most representative among the linguists. In China, He Ziran, Yu Guodong, Huang Guowen, Li Jingwei and Chen Liping and so on, theses linguistics offer a more systematic, comprehensive introduction of research abroad. As to the definitions of code-switching, different linguists have different opinions. Fraomkin gives the definition that “A word or phrase is inserted into a sentence or a phenomenon of the usage in two linguistic varieties or round-trip transform variants9 (Fraomkin 1998:16). Scotton and Chloros think code-switching are linguistic varieties which are used two or more at a same conversation (Scotton & Chloros 1983:26). In my opinion, code-switching is when you know both languages, but goes back and forth between them during a conversation with another person who also knows. This paper aims to analyze the characteristics of code-switching in Chinese-English popular songs, the results will be obtained by accurate data analysis- 17. Theoretical Framework 17. Milory and Huang Guowen,s theories in code-switching In this thesis, the theoretical framework will be followed by two main language masters- Milory and Huang Guowen. They both have certain impact in the area of code-switching. Milory and Huang Guowen point out that code-switching can be divided into alternating and insertional conversion, insertional conversion belongs to intra - clausal conversion, whereas alternating conversion is inter-clausal conversion (Huang, G.W.& Milory 1995: 11-12). Alternating conversion means code-switching is inserted between lines, and the requirements of this form is very strict, should be very regular, follow one Chinese sentence and one English sentence.
