It is a famous political prophetic novel in the history of English literature, which was first published in 1945. It mainly tells a story that happened on a farm in England. The animals of the farm break out in revolt because they are dissatisfied with the rule of human beings, and then establish Animal Farm in which animals take control of themselves by themselves. However, one of the pigs on the farm steals the achievement of the revolution after the victory, and becomes the new leader in the manor. There is no savagery or danger for the animals which are the main characters in the novel, but they are endowed with various human qualities and characteristics by author. Each character has its own specific symbolic meaning. In addition, Seven Commandments and windmill in the novel also have certain symbolic meanings. Orwell expressed abstract thoughts and emotions through these things according to different images of different animals, which has left a deep and concrete impression on the readers.Key words: Animal Farm; symbol meaning; abstraction; concreteness1. Introduction1.1 Orwell George and His WorksOrwell George is a prominent British novelist, journalist and social critic. His representative works including Animal Farm and 1984 are immortal classic masterpieces of anti-totalitarianism. Orwell was born in India in 1903, which was the colony of Britain. As a youngster, he saw and heard of with his own eyes and ears the tragic fact that Indian people were being exploited by the colonialists. Orwell was different from most British children because he was sympathetic to the suffering people of India, which also paved the way for the creation of George Orwell’s representative works in the future. Orwell was instructed in the celebrated Eton College when he was an adolescent. He was sent to Myanmar to work as a policeman, but he was on the side of the convicts. In the 1930s, he took part in the Spanish Civil War and excluded for the reason that he belonged to the Trotsky faction (The Fourth International). After returning to the country, he had to go into exile in France because of being assigned to the left. In the course of the Second World War, he worked as an anti-fascist propagandist for the BBC. Although George Orwell’s life was short, he chronicled the era in which he lived with keen insight and sharp writing, making a great number of predictions ahead of the time, known as the cold conscience of a generation (Net 1) .Although Orwell’s works are political writing, he does not believe in any ideology. Additionally, his writing does not depend on one political theory or another, but on his own experience and feelings. These experiences and feelings are not isolated, but connected to the reality of other citizens’ lives, which creates the distinctive writing style of George Orwell. And when presenting his political views and social understanding, for the most part, he chooses the form of words that mediocre people can read and understand as well. The best example of George Orwell’s ideas is 1984. It`s said that the novel was written by Orwell after learning about the Soviet Union in an attempt to alert the world to be on guard against the totalitarian. Another novel of George Orwell’s, Animal Farm, also a masterpiece of totalitarianism, has a plot that the achievement of animal revolution is stolen by their comrade, Napoleon. This conveys to the readers an idea that a regime would eventually become totalitarian without democratic supervision. According to John R. Hammond (1982), Animal Farm is really a book that is worth reading. The story describes the brewing, rise and final transformation of a revolution for Animalism. And the most terrible matter is that the animals are constantly cheated by the leader in this novel. Besides, totalitarianism is one of the main tools for suppressing animals. 1.2 A Brief Introduction 。
