    • Wallace Stevens(1879-1955)·      The house of Wallace Stevens Wallace Stevens monument  Life and career•Wallace Stevens (October 2, 1879 – August 2, 1955) was an American Modernist poet. He was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, educated at Harvard and then New York Law School, and he spent most of his life working as an executive for an insurance company in Hartford, Connecticut.–The son of a prosperous lawyer, Stevens attended Harvard as a non-degree special student, after which he moved to New York City and briefly worked as a journalist. He then attended New York Law School, graduating in 1903. –After he graduating from New York law school he was admitted to the New York bar in 1904, the year he met Elsie Rachel, a young woman from Reading, whom he married in 1909. They had a daughter, Holly, who was born in 1924 and later edited her father's letters and a collection of his poems.–After working for several New York law firms from 1904 to 1907, he was hired on January 13, 1908, as a lawyer for the American Bonding Company. By 1914 he had become the vice-president of the New York office of the Equitable Surety Company of St. Louis, Missouri. Life and careeroHe received the National Book Award in 1951 and 1955.(美)国家图书奖oWon the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1955.(普利策奖) nFirst book of poetry entitled Harmonium, 1923. nTwo more major books of poetry during the 1920s and 1930s and three more in the 1940s.nCollected Poems in 1955, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.      Stevens's first published work Harmonium appeared in 1914 in Poetry magazine. Harmonium (1923) was his first collection of verse. It contains some of his best known poems,                                     Le Monocle de Mon Uncle《我叔叔的单片眼镜》  The Emperor of Ice Cream《冰激凌皇帝》Including Sunday Morning 《星期日早晨》 Anecdote of the Jar《坛子轶闻》 The Necessary Angel《必要地天使》 Later works of poetry included :Ideas of Order《秩序的思考》 (1935), The Man with the Blue Guitar《拿蓝色吉它的人》 (1937), Notes Toward a Supreme Fiction 《超小说笔记》(1942), (which is often considered his masterpiece)The Auroras of Autumn《秋日晨曦》 (1950).  Literary styleoHe believes that the poet should find beautifulness, joy,, fun, stimulation and meanings in the dirty realities of the socity.So he committed to study the inherent relationship between reality and art;The poet‘s meditation on nature: he advocated the acceptance of the natural reality of life, against the World of Ultimate Bliss;The later poems tend to thinking. there is no fixed pattern.It is difficult to understand. 1.Language: meticulous; full of wit, puns, and irony; difficult to understand.2. 语言细致,充满智慧的,多用双关语,讽刺;很难理解。
