以此为契机，在当时的知识界中酿成一种有名的学术风气，便是学术史家经常提到的“索引运动”，它对我国文化事业产生了深远的影响20世纪20年代的中国, 文献目录学仅处于一种萌芽时期然而，当时中国地质科学的发展却超过了其他学科，处于一个健康而充满活力的发展时期那时的地质科学学科领域，拥有一批杰出的、兢兢业业的学者和研究人员，他们中的翁文灏博士、丁文江博士、葛利普博士、李四光教授、谢家荣教授等，已经成为中国家喻户晓的地质学家同时期内，中国地质学领域的文献正在快速积累，研究人员对文献目录的需求变得迫切起来许多学者在这方面进行了尝试，但也仅限于自己使用直到1934年，杨遵仪先生编纂了一部完整的《中国地质学文献目录》，并于1935年由国立北平研究院出版发行这才有了中国第一部地质学方面的检索工具书，对此，著名学者王宠佑博士的评价是：“这是一件很了不起的成就，中国地质学研究人员将受惠无穷我敢说，因为这项工作，杨先生可以被认为是中国文献目录学领域的先行者”《中国地质学文献目录》是杨遵仪先生在1929-1933年就读清华大学地学系期间，利用课余时间在图书馆进行勤工俭学，全面收集北平地区图书馆内的大量文献资料，制作了几千张卡片，逐一进行整理，反复校对，历经数载，完成《中国地质学文献目录》的编纂。

1933年，杨遵义先生将《中国地质学文献目录》作为清华大学的毕业论文进行提交，获国立北平研究院该年度地质矿产研究奖金论文，并在1935年由国立北平研究院出版发行2 《中国地质文献目录》（杨遵仪）编制的特点（1）收录范围广、报导年限长该目录收录了1840（道光20年）-1934年以来由北平图书馆（主要是中央地质调查所图书馆入藏以及其他城市文献目录著作中所列出的文献）的包含了中外学者用中日英法德文所著有关我国地质学方面的文献2200余条2）起步较高、编排有序该目录由著者书目和主题索引两部分组成著者目录是按著者姓氏的罗马字母为序（其中同一作者有数种著作收入时,则按其发表年代的先后为序）进行编排，主题索引均按标题和主题词的罗马字母顺序编排，著者后面数目字同著者目录相对应款目著录的顺序为：著作名称、出版刊物、起止页码、卷（期）以及出版年3）编辑质量较高该目录是以英文版形式报导了中外学者用中日英法德文所著有关我国地质学方面的文献3 结束语作者根据对中国地质图书馆1916-2010年间入藏的地学类检索工具书以及中国索引学会《索引文献编年要目（1932-1990年）》的深入调研，认为由杨遵仪先生编纂的《中国地质学文献目录》，是我国地质学类的第一部检索工具书，此后近七十年中国地质图书馆连续出版了《中国地质文献目录》（1934-1935），计荣森编，1936年出版；《中国地质文献目录》（1936-1940），计荣森编，1942年出版；《中国地质文献目录》（1940-1955），第一编，1958年出版；《中国地质文献目录》（1956-1958）第二编，1961年出版；《中国地质文献目录》（1962-1981）第四编（共计6册），1986年出版；《中文科技资料目录——地质学》（1978-1988），《中国地质文摘》1986年至今。
