(VDA) 3 Exclusion of liability and non-binding VDA recommendation The Association of the German Automotive Industry (VDA) recommends its members to apply VDA standards for the implementation and maintenance of quality management systems. The VDA 6.1, VDA 6.2 and VDA 6.4 Standards are recommendations avail- able for general use. However, anyone applying them must also ensure the fully comprehensive implementation of VDA Volume 6 “Quality Audit Fun- damentals”. This VDA volume takes into account state of the art technology, current at the time of issue. Implementation of VDA recommendations relieves no one of responsibility for their own actions. In this respect everyone acts at their own risk. The VDA and those involved in issuing VDA recommendations shall bear no liability. If during the use of VDA recommendations, errors or the possibility of misin- terpretation are found, it is requested that these be notified to the VDA im- mediately, so that any possible faults can be corrected. Greater expecta- tions are placed on products and product liability is considered from a new legal foundation. The VDA expresses its quality standards in the VDA 6 vol- umes with a view to meeting these demands. The first editions of volume 6 of the VDA series “Quality Management in the Automotive Industry”, published in 1991 and jointly drawn up by vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers on the basis of the ISO 9001:1989 and ISO 9004:1989 standards, became highly appreciated within a very short period of time. The 2nd Edition took into account the further development of quality sys- tems within the framework of international harmonization and related revi- sions of international norms and automotive industry standards. The new edition of the ISO 9000 series and the requirements of the E.A.Q.F. (Evaluation dApitude Qualite Fournisseurs, France) and AVSQ (Associazi- one Nazionale Industrie Automobilistiche, Italy) standards were integrated. Within the context of mutual recognition of audits between vehicle manufac- turers and suppliers, as well as of certificates issued by independent, rec- ognised certification bodies (registrars), it became necessary to describe, in more detail, the requirements, rules and procedures in a single volume and to make this volume available to all concerned parties. This volume is therefore aimed at: organizations intending to implement quality management in accor- dance with one of the VDA quality standards, organizations demonstrating quality management in accordance with an international standard and wishing to be audited (by customers, certification bodies) against one of the VDA quality standards within the context of an upgrade 6 organizations wanting to evaluate the quality management systems, processes and products of their suppliers, and VDA-QMC authorized certification bodies. In this volume, the following requirements are regulated: qualification of system auditors at certification bodies, vehicle manu- facturers and suppliers procedures for auditing quality management systems the certification process. Furthermore, the guidelines in this volume reflect current findings, trends and directives for implementation of the VDA standards. The benefit of VDA 6 volumes is not only to be gained by organizations from within the automotiv
