AbstractThe legendary story of Hua Mulan was known well by Chinese people. Hua Mulan disguised herself as a man, in order to substitute for her father to service in the army. As a heroine, she is a good example in the eyes of Chinese women who were restrained by feudal society in ancient times. And her story has been transferred from generation to generation. In 1998, the film Mulan, which was adapted from the Ballad of Mulan of China, was produced by Disney Company. Its director pooled wisdom and formed synergy, and took the main set of Chinese cultures, meanwhile, intermingled with America cultures, to cater to different people’s tastes in different cultural backgrounds. The essay uses Feminist Literary Criticism theory, comparing the image of Hua Mulan in both the Ballad of Mulan and Disney’s Mulan, taking marriage concepts and cultural values as main points, to conclude the different social role of females between China and America. The essay aims to invoke people's cultural sensitivity and deepen their understanding on Chinese traditional cultures. Introduction Under the process of globalization, inter-cultural communication becomes increasingly important, it results the rise of a new tendency on the communication between Chinese and American, so more and more movies and TV programs, which intermingled both Chinese culture and America’s, are adapted for screen, and it put forward new requirements for us to understand the cultural differences between China and Western, and ensure that the inter-cultural go smoothly.This essay uses Feminist Literary Criticism theory, with methodology of Comparative Analysis Approach to analyses the different social role of females between China and America. From the perspective of feminist image, the essay takes the Ballad of Mulan and Disney’s movie MuLan as examples.This essay from three parts to analyses the cultural differences which are reflected in Mulan between China and America. First are cultural differences between China and America; second is the image of traditional Chinese Mulan; third is Disney’s image of Milan----a feminist. By comparing the different cultures reflected in Mulan and then conclude the different social role of females between China and America. The essay aims to differentiate the cultural differences between China and America, which was mostly reflected on the females’ social role, and invoke people’s cultural sensitivity and ensure that the inter-cultural go smoothly. There are few foreign researches on the image of Mulan. Only one book, named The Art of Mulan, which was written by Jeff Kurtti. Other relevant researches are published on newspapers, magazines, and on the internet, and most of them are comments of the movie, which paying more attention to movie’s artistry and recreation. In the Early Years of New China, the image of Mulan was displayed by films, dramas, such as Henan 。
