Both films are based on Erich Kastner's novel Das Doppelte Lottchen.But the new movie is age-old on the one hand and also full of up-to-date features on the other.§Hallie and Annie are twin sisters. They were separated when they were born because their parents got divorced. Hallie lives with her father Nick, a vineyard-owner, in Napa Valley, California. Annie lives with her mother Elizabeth, who is a wedding gown designer.  The two young redheads, Hallie and Annie, coincidentally meet at a summer camp in Maine, USA and discover that they look pretty and similar. Soon, their common history opens up when they are banned into the isolation cabin for unsocial behavior. They discover the secret that they are twin sisters.  Both sisters decide to switch sides, as Annie never had a father and Hallie never had a mother. All works well, until Nick decides to marry Meredith, a creepy but beautiful woman who is only after his money. Now, the girls decide to let the parents meet. She has attracted a great deal of publicity, particularly surrounding her personal life.§The film was met with generally positive reviews. It entered the box office charts at number 2 on July 31, 1998.
