Marriage customs differ in various cultures because of cultural divergences, leading to people ’s different attitudes towards marriage. Nowadays, with the deepening of cultural exchange in Chinese and America and the rapid development of globalization, people’s different attitudes towards marriage have aroused lots of scholars’ attention. However, most previous studies investigate the reasons of different marriage customs between Chinese and America without taking the deep cultural reasons into consideration. Therefore, the present study give a comprehensive analysis of marriage customs between Chinese and American cultures and the cultural reasons behind these differences with the example of The Wedding Banquet and Runaway Bride, aiming at summing up people’s different attitudes towards marriage and help improve the cultural exchange between Chinese and western countries. marriage customs; attitudes towards marriage; Chinese and American cultures;  Chapter I Introduction 1.1 Research Significance Culture is accumulated generation by generation, and it is the shared customs, values, behaviors and beliefs by a group of people. Marriage comes along with the civilization of human race, and it goes through various changes, which are the representations of culture civilization. However, people in different nations are certainly influenced and shaped by their own cultures, which is also displayed in their marriage cultures, that is to say, different nations have their own cultures and marriage cultures and customs. Since Chinese and American cultures differ from each other apparently, Chinese and American marriages customs also have obvious differences influenced by the two cultures. Wedding Banquet and Runaway Bride are two famous movies which reflect Chinese and American marriage customer. Wedding Banquet is directed by Ang Lee. It describes the love between Wei Tong and Simon who are homosexuals in America, while Wei Tong’s parents want him to get married and have children. Wei Tong thought that his parents who live in China with Chinese traditional view will not accept his love on a man. Therefore, he wants to finagle his parents by getting married with Wei Wei who is a frustrated female artist. During the process, the movie displayed a Chinese wedding and reflects many details of Chinese marriage customs. Moreover, the wedding also has some American characteristics, because the story happened in American. Runaway Bride is an American comedic movie. Ike is a columnist of New Time. Because of his broken marriage, he is sarcastic when facing women. What’s more, he is always terribly frustrated because of the looming deadlines. In this situation, he meets Maggie, who has escaped from weddings for many times, and Ike and Maggie begin to get to know each other and fall in love with each other.
