And I want to talk zbout Leo’s growth. Leo is afflicted with the relations between reality and ideal at first. In his mind, the marriage broker should be ancient and honorable, highly approved in the Jewish community, while the apprance of Salzman is realy unpleasant to his sight. What’s worse, the girls he introduces to Leo, taken from his barrel, all bear some defects. Lily H, a high school teacher and an old virgin; Ruth K, almost perfect but a lame on her right foot. The image of these girls leaves him nothing but disappointment. No one caters to his taste. He experiences a hard spiritual suffering after Salzman’s departure. He cannot do everything attentively. As a matter of fact, all these girls signify the people who suffer great hardships at that time and need to be salvaged. If one wants to be with God, the pains are needed. This implies that Leo has made his first step on the road to come to God. Then Leo still bears the spiritual sufferings, but he has been greatly awakened. Salzman persuades Leo to make an appointment with Lily. Lily’s probing questions really hurt him, especially the question “When did you become enamored of God?” His inner world has been touched deeply. Meantime, it help Leo to realize the problems of his own. Leo regains his identity completely and his soul has been sublimated. What he really needs is a premarital love instead of a person for marriage. He comes across Stella by chance through one of photographs, and falls in love with the pretty girl.
