Because there are no advanced astronomy or astrophysics classes in high school, I would love to study the subject much further in the College through classes like The Big Bang and Beyond and Nucleosynthesis, Supernovae, and Compact Objects.Just this summer, I explored another new field; I was able to attend the EPGY Summer Program in economics at Stanford University to explore what real economics is about. I used to think that economics was all about business and making money in the markets, but now I know that it encompasses much more, that it is about scarcity and people’s choices.Every major event in history can be traced back to some economic decision.Penn offers great programs for economics majors as well, such as PIER, which gives undergraduates an opportunity to research economics.Thus, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Penn has produced so many alumni and faculty members that have become Nobel laureates in physics and in economics because now I know that Penn’s world class education will offer me access to the subject matter of interest to me. However, even if I do not end up pursuing either of these fields, from my visit and information sessions I know that the College of Arts and Sciences provides the breadth of studies to fulfill my interests.Outside of the classroom, Penn also offers everything I’m looking for in a school. As a huge football fan, I am excited about the prospect ofrooting for last year’s Ivy League championship team. But I hope to support the team as more than just a passive observer. During high school, I’ve been an active member of my marching band that consistently ranks top 10 in thestate, and I would love to perform with the Penn band, especially at Penn Stadium. During my campus visit, I was lucky enough to actually go inside the Penn stadium and onto the field itself, and I was awestruck by how enormous it was.
