If Chinese and American cultures can be understood accurately, it will better achieve the expected results of their exchanges and cooperation. However, some people are not clear about the cultural differences between China and America. Besides, some Chinese cultures are hard to comprehend by Americans which causes conflicts easily. A film The Guasha Treatment is a good case of cultural differences between China and America. It takes Guasha as the clue to vividly portray different filial piety, family education, view of friends and so on in China and America.In order to know and distinguish the cultural differences between China and America clearly, this paper attempts to compare filial piety and family education between China and America by using the method of documentation based on The Guasha Treatment. Moreover, this paper attempts to analyze the factors that cause differences. Therefore, it may deepen peoples understanding of filial piety and family education in China and America. This paper will also make cross-cultural communication between China and America smoother. Xu Datong, a Chinese immigrant, is a father of a five-year-old son Dennis. He has a successful career and a happy family after struggling for eight years in the United States. Datong tells everyone excitedly at the companys annual party that he loves US and his American dream comes true. Nevertheless, this good news is broken by an incident. Datongs father goes to America from China to visit his son’s family. While there, Datongs father is unable to read English labels of medicine. So he gives his grandson a treatment of Guasha to cure a slight fever. The purple marks left by the treatment on Dennis back are considered to be evidence of abusing child by American social workers. Thus, Datongs family is submitted to the court. In order to protect his father from trouble and lawsuit, Datong cheats to the judge and admits that he does it. Later, Datongs father goes back to China. Finally, Xu Datong and his wife are able to reunite with his son.Now, as exchanges and cooperation in culture and economy between China and America are increasing, cultural differences that are manifested are also increasing. This film is a very good reflection of differences between Chinese and American culture, such as the Guasha treatment, filial piety, family education, legal concept and so on. This paper is divided into four main parts and chooses two aspects to study which are filial piety and family education. Filial piety is a virtue that shows respect for parents, the elders, and ancestors. It has been very important in China since ancient times and its considered a key virtue in Chinese culture. In the Classic of Filial Piety, Confucius (551-479 BCE) says that "filial piety is the root of virtue and the basis of philosophy" (Wikipedia.org). Modern philosopher Fung Yu-lan once described 。
