ProxemicsNinth GroupCONTENTS01Case and questions02What is Proxemics?03The examples of Proxemics04The reasons for different Proxemics目￿录05The solutionsCase  Susie，an American living in China, brought her four-year-old son to a park one afternoon to let him play. As he was playing beside her, however, she looked around and noticed many people staring at her child. She started at her child. She started to become quite upset. Then, suddenly, one man took out his phone and started to take a photo of the boy.Susie confronted the man,“What are you doing? You have no right to photograph my boy!”She angrily took her boy and moved to another part of the park.  After a few minutes, Susie started to clam down. However, just as she was comfortable again,an elderly Chinese woman walked up with a big smile and reached down  and patted the boy’s head. “He’s so cute!” she said. She then proceeded to rub his cheeks with her hand.Case     As the woman was touching his face, however, Susie quickly reached down and picked the boy up.“How dare you touch my son!” she yelled at the woman angrily. Before the woman hand a chance to respond, Susie stormed off with her boy and never returned to that park.Questions    1、Why does susie get so upset at the people staring, the man taking the photo, and the woman touching her son?  Susie is upset because each of these people is invading the privacy and persongal space of her son    2、How does this reflect American proxemics？   Americans generally prefer a large distance between them and stangers. This is especially so when one's own child is involved. eastern countries tend to require a much smaller personnal space and are accustomed to staring at children of other people, commenting on them, and touching them. In American, though, this is seen as disrespectful at best or child endangerment at worset. Parents may even call the police if they think someone appers to be taking too much of an interest in their child.Questions    3、How should the Chinese people have acted when they saw her boy playing?  The Chinese people in the park can look at and admire the child, but they should not stare. They should not take any photos without the mother's permission. And they should never touch another person's child unless they are family members or very close frends.What is Proxemics?  Proxemics is a subcategory of the study of nonverbal communication along with haptics(touch), kinesics(body movement), vocalics(paralanguage), and chronemics(sructure of time). Proxemics can be defined as "the interrelated observations and theories of man's use of space as a specialized elaboration of culture  Persomal space that we carry with us, the "bubble" of space that you keepbetween yourself and the person ahead of you in a line.   Physical space, such as why desks face the front of a classroomrather than towards a center isleDiagram of Eward T.
