Aim and Significance:William Makepeace Thackeray is one of the most important writers of the English critical realism in 19th century. In the money-fevered era, Thackeray criticized the whole bourgeois and aristocratic society by inditing his famous novel Vanity Fair. Vanity Fair is Thackeray’s masterpiece, which is also a marvelous work in British Literature. In this novel, the female images are endowed with vivid personalities, especially the two main characters Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley, and enchant appreciation from a good deal of students. It is acknowledged that the females in Vanity Fair each have a dual character---viciousness and virtuousness. For instance, Rebecca Sharp is dehumanized from the perspective of her tucking into the upper class at all costs, but from the angle of view that her endeavor to achieve a better life, Rebecca deserves compliment. Therefore, the female images are essential to comprehend the implicit criticism of an unfair reality. Furthermore, the females are the outcome and victim of the vanity fair. It is the female attachment to male that uniquely pushes forward the plot development, interprets the psychology of characters and molds distinctive personalities. 2. Literature Review::There are a large number of outstanding scholars who have made their studies on Vanity Fair. Among the foreign researchers, for example, Catalan, Zelma (2010)focused on the research of politics of irony in Vanity Fair; Harden, Edgar F(1995)carried on the studies on the images in Vanity Fair. In China, the study of this field has also got much attention. For instance, Rong Hailong(2011)studied from the point of view of social level, and Fu Shouxiang and Hu Wen(2012)tried to researched from the bisexuality perspective. On the basis of related studies in this 2field, the present thesis attempts to study the female images in Vanity Fair. .3. Main Methods and Ways of Studies:The study into the female images in Vanity Fair can enhance readers to profoundly grasp Thackeray’s writing intention. First, via the description on the females that the novel presents at different time, places and scenes, the thesis prompts readers to have a thorough understanding of the female characteristics. Second, from the feminism perspective, the merit and demerit of the two main characters are analyzed, underlining the other side of the females opposite to the one side presented in the novel. Third, through eulogizing the importance of bisexuality in career building, the thesis reveals the bisexuality possessed by Rebecca that influences her ways to handle matters, and the absence of bisexuality in Amelia’s personality that intensifies her tragic marriage with George Osborne. Lastly, focusing on the practical significance of the novel, the thesis expounds the educational meaning of what people should learn or refrain from. 4.
