Theres a lake located in one corner of the park. Each time I jog by this lake, I see the same elderly woman sitting at the waters edge with a small metal cage sitting beside her. This past Sunday my curiosity got the best of me, so I stopped jogging and walked over to her.

As I got closer, I realized that the metal cage was in fact a small trap. There were three turtles, unharmed, slowly walking around the base of the trap. She had a fourth turtle in her lap that she was carefully scrubbing with a spongy brush. "If you dont mind my nosiness, Id love to know what youre doing with these turtles.' She smiled. "Im cleaning off their shells ,' she replied.

"Anything on a turtles shell, like algae or scum, reduces the turtles ability to absorb heat and impedes its ability to swim. It can also corrode and weaken the shell over time.' She went on: "I spend a couple of hours each Sunday morning, relaxing by this lake and helping these little guys out. Its my own strange way of making a difference. '她连续说道:"每个星期天早晨我都会花几个小时待在湖边,边放松自己,边帮这些小家伙摆脱困难这就是我惊奇的制造转变的方式' "But dont most freshwater turtles live their whole lives with algae and scum hanging from their shells?' I asked.

"Yep, sadly, they do,' she replied. "圆满的是,它们的确这样'她回答道 "Well then, dont you think your time could be better spent? And 99% of these turtles dont have kind people like you to help them clean off their shells. So, no offense but how exactly are your localized efforts here truly making a difference?' The woman giggled aloud. She then looked down at the turtle in her lap, scrubbed off the last piece of algae from its shell, and said, "Sweetie, if this little guy could talk, hed tell you I just made all the difference in the world.

The Important Things in Life 生活中重要的事情 A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches indiameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up the remaining open areas of the jar. He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "Yes.' 同学们全都同意说:"已经满了' "Now,' said the professor, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things your family, your partner, your health, your children things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else, the small stuff.'

鹅卵石就是那些对你们不是最重要但也要紧的东西,比如你的工作、房子、车而沙子就是那些其他的无关紧要的小事情' "If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party, or fix the disposal.'
