T. S. Eliot praises it to be "the first step that American fiction has taken since Henry James." And Richard Culler comments that "The Great Gatsby has become so much a fact of American literature，so much a permanent presence, a persistent influence that it is almost impossible to imagine contemporary American fiction without Jay Gatsby. No other figure in our literature has become so eponymous". Robert Ornstein also speaks highly of it by remarking that "Fitzgerald did create a myth with the imagination sweep of America's historical adventure across an untamed continent".
